I have a question about the 307 used in the 1968 Chevelles and El Caminos. There are two 68 Chevelles and one 68 El Camino in my local junkyard all three have 307's in them but only the Chevelles have the oil fill tube in front of the motor (not sure of the exact name) but the El Camino doesn't have it. These cars are very much original and look to have their original motors, so did early built 68's have the tube and later built 68's not have it? I have asked a few people at the local cruise-ins and have not been able to give me an answer. BTW all three are Baltimore built cars and the El Camino was built in the third week of July.

Interesting observation. You wouldn't think TWO 68 Chevelles with apparent 307s would have had engine changes in their lifetime. Didn't happen to get a date on the Chevelles with the oil tube - either body tag or engine stamping?

I will try and stop by the junkyard this Saturday and get all the trim tag info on all three 68's. They are all very much original, the paint, interior, etc look original. They look to have been siting there for close to 20 years (the Elkys tags expired in 1989). I just started wondering about the oil tubes the other day and figured some of the knowledgeable folks here might be able shed some light on this, would you know if 1969 small blocks would have the tube? Was 68 the last year for it or was the tube done away with half way through the 1968 model year? Thanks for any help.

The 307 in my 69 does not have the tube in it, neither have any of the other 307 cars I have had. I have a 68 dated intake in the shed that has the fill tube on it, not sure what it came off of though. I'll pull it out and check the casting number and let ya know what I find.

There were several engine plants producing. It probably all was determined by engine supply and the amount of vehicles produced at any one plant. Some plants may have manufactured more cars with base 307 engines and thus had the engine with the revised parts sooner that the other plant(s) may have.

Dale, I was only able to get the trim tag info for one Chevelle and the El Camino. The other Chevelle had a buch of junk in the way I'll try and get it's info next time (intrestingly it's a Concourse coupe, I've never seen one in person before), they read as follows.
