I'm having a problem since I move to wisconsin get my chevelle through polution testing. It passes all tests but they do a visual inspection and it doesn't have a A.I.R. system(smog pump or air pump?) Can you tell by the Vin if this came on this car. It was originally bought and live in Paducah Ky until I bought it 12 years ago. Never had any problems in IL. Any help would be appreciated. As always thanks for the help and excellent resource

It's not suppose to have an AIR system unless it was sold in California. I don't think L78 cars had smog on them, but that is kind of irrelevant to this situation since you cannot tell by the VIN what engine was in it.

This link shows OPTIONS. "K"s will interest you as it shows the AIR system as "an option" which could be backup for the CA only argument. I seem to remember that even in CA it was only on 4spd cars in '69 but that could be an old wives tale...... For what its worth, mine had original exhaust on it (as far as I could tell) and had AIR manifolds - built in Baltimore and was sold in FL. This doesn't mean it wasn't "originally" destined for CA, but I don't know how GM assigined build vs delivery. East coast build and West coast delivery would seem odd. Sorry, more "for what its worth". I have a friend who moved from AZ to the bay area. Her '68 Pace Car Vette has(had) a 383 with complete Hooker coated exhaust system. After a year of hassels, she had an original exhaust system and all the smog installed to register. (3 years ago)

I talk to people at GM and this is what they said.
1969 396/325 stick shift AIR required. 396/350 automatic AIR required. All I gotta do now is move or buy a complete AIR system

There is a solution. Put a 307 between the fenders long enough to get it inspected. Then change it back. More than one way to skin an bureacrat!

Still hammering away at the DMV. I read if your car is modified from the original you can get a Hobbyist plate but haven't found out if that will get my by emissions. Taking it to a mechanic that works with emissions and has friends in the DMV, see what happens then. If not I'll figure out a way to register it in another county.
