I was wondering how much horsepower a matching #'s 396 would make out of a 1968 GMC pickup?

If that 1968 motor is truely all original gm as from factory with a q-jet- 4 brl carb 325 gross hp is likely what it is,if opt motor was avail then possibly 350 gross hp but not likely IMHO.

Get casting # off rear driver side of block by bell housing flange and or #s from the pad on pass side front of motor by head to block interface.

I would guess it is the 325hp version.

is it 2 or 4 barrel? I know there was a 265 HP 396 in that time frame.

I believe the 2brl 396 was avail in 69 & not 68 which is why i didnt mention it but your correct that it was 265 wopping gross hp.

I believe the 68 truck 396 was rated at 310 hp. I had one and the heads were close to the 148 heads on the 69 265 hp engine. Kind of a middle of the road open/closed chamber. Ive slept since then though...
