: Oil Pan Leak

Over the weekend, I pulled my transmission in an attempt to solve my vibration problem. During the process, I used a floor jack (with a 2X4) under the oil pan to hold the back of the engine up. Pretty stupid, I realize now. After setting up the the engine hoist and removing the jack, I got an oil leak in the rear portion of the pan, both on the rubber seal (half round section) and at one of the corners.

I pulled the pan tonight to replace the gasket. However, I am wondering if I bent the pan or just over compressed the seal and it started leaking after the weight was gone. I was unable to further tighten the bolts (to take up the slacke) before removing the pan.

I am wondering if I need to fix the pan before replaceing or maybe just using some RTV on the rubber seal to fill in the gap, if any.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I'm chasing a rear pan leak also right now. Ironic, I never rememeber having a pan leak until I went to a 1 pc. pan gasket. That pan has to sit flat all the way around. Dent in the bottum won't hurt (except for oil pickup clearance) but a warped pan rail won't cut it.

I was concerned that I bent the pan rail, not the bottom. I just didn't konw if this was possible or common from lifting the engine by the pan.

Larry,

How did you get the pan out with the engine in the car? I have a complete rebuild - all is complete - and a small leak from the back of the pan gasket - not rear seal. I can live with it but it seems alsmost impossible to raise the motor enough to get the pan out to put a new gasket in.....

Sorry, I should have stated that this is on a Corvette. On the Corvette, they slip right out by dropping the idler arm steering linkage.
