: Bucket Seat Spring Question???
I'm about to remove my bucket seat covers, then install new seat buns and fix up my springs. Some are definately worn and may even have a broken spring or two. I priced replacement spring assemblies from a few suppliers. To do two buckets in repo bottom and backs would cost approx $400.00. Man a person can sink a ton into a set of buckets. Anyway what I was wondering is has anyone ever fashioned a set of side support springs on 68-72 bucketsout of 9 guage zig zag springs. If so I was wondering about the difficulty factor. I believe the springs that you actually sit on and the back support would be fairly easy to replace. It would definately be a lot cheaper just to buy a roll of 9 guage zig zag springs and some clamps.
Finally Apr 8th, 09, 10:36 PM Odds are you won't need to replace all 4 springs, both backs and both bottoms. If you do yes it will cost over $300, NPD prices, I've been looking. If it's only side support springs you can buy just those, a lot cheaper. Yes someone here has fashioned replacement springs. It was posted quite awhile ago and I don't recall who it was, you'd have to do a search.
Finally Apr 9th, 09, 3:43 PM I went to NPD today and looked at a set of the side support springs for 66-72 buckets. The kit contains 4 S springs and the metal clamps used to clamp them to the other springs. They appear to be the 2 outside springs on the side near the front corner of the seat, one on each side. Also the 2 outside springs on the front edge of the seat. Nothing for the seat back, only the bottom, $28.95.
Complete seat bottom spring is $87 and includes the 4 side support springs, already attached to the other springs. It also has the cord attached, looks just like the original cord. I opted for the complete bottom spring. I have a least 3 broken side support springs and just don't trust the rest of the assembly. Also not sure how easy it would be to replace just the side support springs without special tools.
Well I ended up going to Lutty Chevrolet which is about a 25-30 mile drive for me. I bought 2 sets of just the side support springs for $29.95 per set. So I have a set for both buckets. If any of the other springs are broken I can purchase a hole roll of zig zag spring for $60.00 locally. The non side support springs look pretty easy to change. I would think the outer spring on the seat portion would be a common spring to break as one puts extra pressure every time you get in and out of the car.
Even with the complete spring assembly the side support springs have to be installed into the seat frame. I'm guessing if there is any difficulty that is were it would be.
Finally Apr 9th, 09, 7:52 PM Brad,
Is Lutty Chevrolet a Chevy dealer? Surprised they had them if it is, good price. So let us know how it goes. Like I said, I got the whole spring set because of the number of broken springs and all of them are pretty rusty. I'll see how this job goes.
Hank; Lutty Chevrolet is a vintage chevy parts dealer just like NPD, Ground up,etc. I think anytime you mess with buckets you should get prepared for battle. Maybe you should make sure you're up on your tetanus shots.

Tetanus shots are a good idea, I can't count the cuts, scrapes and pokes I've gotten while working on these seats. I have blood stained clothes from wiping my hands on them until the bleeding stops.

$150 for both? Yes you could charge more. NPD in Michigan charges $270 something for buckets. I've heard $240 for buckets and rear seat. Rear Seat is easy. So if you're asking $150 for 2 buckets that is bargain, if I had know you would be doing mine.
72sbc427 Apr 10th, 09, 3:36 AM I guess I should have clarified. I am selling the buckets out of my 72 camino. Not redoing them.
As long as they aren't super rusty I'd say the average is approx $300.00 for a set.

Oh, yes they are definately worth more. One new frame with no springs and no slide tracks is over $200. With springs and tracks the price goes over $400 for one seat. Then you still might need cushions, covers, side and back hard plastic and headrest.

Wow, you must not be trying too hard to sell them. Or else there must be a lot of them for sale in Arizona. If they are decent at all and complete they would disappear here in my area quickly. I would give you that much and pay for shipping if you still have them, seriously. RichF
Jim Mac Apr 12th, 09, 10:53 PM Heck I'd give him 150 and save him the hassle of shipping. seriously, if your in town and need a set of covers, Ive got a set I just pulled off my elcamino. Not new/stock or anything, but if your covers are trashed, you could throw them on and maybe make selling them easier. Im giving the covers away if your interested. Jim
kendaddy853 Apr 19th, 09, 8:00 PM I just bought spring sets from Muscle Factory for my '71. They were 60.00 each(120.00 for a bottom and back)and I was happy with 'em. They really look nice and puffy with the new covers on!!
