I have an original 396 car and I am putting a 66 396 in my car that was originally in an Impala. The frame brackets on my car measure 2 5/8 OD. I have tried finding motor mounts, and the 66 replacements are 1/2 inch bigger in the ID than what I need (1/4 on each side) and I could not compress it this much. The mounts on the motor when I bought it are around 2 1/4. My local shop said to pry the 2 1/4 ones open a bit so they would work... Seems weird to me...

Has anyone else encountered this? if so what was your solution, or what do you recommend?

Sure it seems weird.....If your 66 was originally a small block car just buy the correct 66 small block mounts, they will bolt up to your stock frame stands and the 396.....If you have Big Block frame stand use stock Big Block mounts....Its more matching the stands and mounts than engines....Good Luck

If it was a 6 cylinder car then someone else will have to chirp in as I am clueless on those.

I found this on another post:

2 3/8" width is 68-72 BB and 350
2 5/8" width is 68-72 307, 66-67 BB, and 64-67 all SB's
If you want interlocks on 307 brackets use the 66-67 BB engine mounts
or the current GM SB 307 68-72 engine mount (3990914) now has interlocks.

Does that mean I should try the SB motor mounts? will they work? Will tehre be alignment or height issues? I appreciate the help - Roger

Rodger those look a lot like 67 Big Block frame stands, in saying that I mean they very well may be 66 Big Block frame stands as I believe they are very similar. I would try a set of stock 66 Big Block mounts on them. You may have to try a few different local parts places but they should be able to get you the ones you need for those stands. Some of the guys at these parts places kinda have to be lead around by the nose but they will eventually find what you need if you stay on them. I wish I could confirm the data you posted one way or the other but I cant.....Sorry....Good Luck

Roger,

100% for sure, they are 66-67 big block mounts.

It sounds like you're trying to fit the newer 1968-72 motor mounts on your 1966 frame stands.

I agree with the others; your frame stands are 66-67 BB (pictured), so 1966 Chevelle 396 motor mounts should work.............

Thanks! Every parts store here in town wanted to sell me the 2285. That link also shows the replacement part number of 2267. Another local store has those, and the ID on that one is 2 3/4, so I am guessing that will be the right one.

I assume as long it is the short/wide style I should be good to go. I sure hope so... hard to work when I spend half the day looking for the correct mounts :pout:
