: 68 Tag help
rick70SS Jul 17th, 04, 10:12 PM I've misplaced my book and could use a little help
05D 5884
ST 68 13427 KAN 2234 BODY
TR 770-A-XZ D-D PAINT
This is a 68, six banger with column manual.I have the transmission, no motor. I bought this at an auction today and the motor was pulled and sold seperate . Found this out after it was sold but I bought it for parts anyway.
The 13427 shows it as a V8 but it did have the 6. It does have a 12 bolt which suprised me. The best part is the price. $20 with title! Thanks for any information. Rick
DaleM Jul 17th, 04, 10:45 PM 05D ~ May, 4th week
5884 ~ unknown
13427 ~ 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan
770-A- ~ Dk. Blue Ramara-Rapture-Richmond Cloth/Imitation Leather bench
XZ ~ never seen code between trim and paint
D-D ~ Fathom Blue
Sounds like a pretty combination.
I'm wondering if the 6-cyl that was pulled was original to the car anyway. What's the first five of the VIN - that's the definitive answer.
rick70SS Jul 17th, 04, 11:41 PM Thanks Dale. The title is 13327....DUH!
The trim code 770-A-XZ is exactly like that on the cowl tag . ???? Thanks.

NOTE--3dr digit of VIN codes base engine type, odd number means it was a 6 and even number means a V8. Fisher Body had no need to code an engine on the Body Tag and often had no idea what it was going to be unless some other option code denoted V8, such as SS 396. It made no difference in how they built the body, option engines just mean they had to punch more holes in cowl or floor etc.
Any chance you post an photo of the trim tag? Anomalies like this are interesting and seeing the complete tag is informative.
rick70SS Jul 18th, 04, 11:14 PM I'll post a picture , if I can get a decent shot and figure out how to get on here. may be a few days.
elcamino Jul 19th, 04, 8:37 AM If you don't have a web site to host the photo, you can contact Dale or I.
Get as close as you can with camera though.
rick70SS Jul 19th, 04, 9:21 AM elcamino, I am a complete computer idiot. I'll send the picture via email if you can post it for me .Thanks
elcamino Jul 19th, 04, 10:02 AM They are called "personal confusers" for a reason.
Are the original seats still in car? Anthing unusual about them?

rick70SS Jul 20th, 04, 12:25 AM Front is just a split bench. It does have the deluxe trim ,seats are blue vinyl with a checkered design in the cloth part that is in the center of each seat. They, along with the whole car are in sad shape. Tried looking for build sheet and the backseat was wet, rotton. Front seat was in better shape. Dropped gas tank down to check there but didn't have any luck. Tank still had 3-4 gallons of twenty year old gas, smelled more like varnish.
To clarify and error I made in the first post. Bad news for me ,it's only a ten bolt rear. I counted them twice while it was still IN the ground and came up with 12??? ,but after getting wheels under it again found it must have been my wishful thinking. Thanks guys for the help.
Rick
DaleM Jul 20th, 04, 8:03 AM Since it appears original, if you can get a picture of the interior like any of these (http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/68interior_photos.htm), I'd like to add it to my ChevelleStuff site. Also, does this color (http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/gallery/d_grotto_blue.jpg) look the same? I goofed on the paint color, "D" is Grotto Blue and not Fathom Blue (E) in 68.
You can email me directly at 396guy@chevelles.com
elcamino Jul 20th, 04, 8:07 AM Kansas City has a habit of taping build sheet to the inside of front fenders. Would likely have to remove the shirt to see it but many have been found in there up toward the 'A' pillar.
DaleM Jul 20th, 04, 8:09 AM NOTE--3dr digit of VIN codes base engine type, odd number means it was a 6 and even number means a V8. Fisher Body had no need to code an engine on the Body Tag and often had no idea what it was going to be unless some other option code denoted V8, such as SS 396. It made no difference in how they built the body, option engines just mean they had to punch more holes in cowl or floor etc. Beginning to make a believer of me. :D More and more of these are showing up more years and not just 64 and 65. Since there are many body tags that do reflect the same 6-cyl 'code' (i.e., 13327), could it be there was a little bit different trim between 6-cyl cars and V8 cars and many just got the V8 trim by default?
I agree that 99 times out of 100, the engine being installed has no bearing on the body shell but since there are 6-cyl cars with (apparent) 6-cyl body tags, there must be some reason.
Ah, the mysteries of GM and their plants... smile.gif
elcamino Jul 20th, 04, 8:11 AM KC had a habit of taping a BS to the front inside of fenders up toward the top. Removing the skirt should reveal them if they survived.
Would you mind sharing the VIN with us also????
Dale
In re: to the 3rd digit. In the mid 60's GM started to re-organize their assembly operations under GMAD. Management of both the Fisher and assembly came under one management. Thats about the time, things started to change.
KC was one of the first to be done along with LA. By the late 60's, all were under one division, General Motors Assembly Division and not controlled by Fisher and the car brand companies. GM has acquired 100 control of Fisher Body which had been a subsidiary since the '20's I think.
rick70SS Jul 21st, 04, 3:38 PM The Grotto blue is the correct color. Dale,I can e-mail a picture of the front seat and front door panel, but it will be friday . Feel free to post them here if you want in case others are interested.
I'll also get the vin number for you elcamino.
This may be common , but I thought it was a little different : this is a non carpet car, just the matching blue vinyl floor.
DaleM Jul 21st, 04, 5:15 PM Friday is fine. I'll be out of town this weekend but I'll put it up on the ChevelleStuff site next week. So many of the 'non-upscale' models were beat to death or there's no reproduction (or replacement) parts for them anymore, it's always a plus to get any photos of them while still in an original state.
Blue vinyl floor? Not black with blue mats? How odd...
