I just purchased a 1970 396 SS. After working in the engine bay I noticed that the VIN number in the windshield does not match the number on the cowl tag. I was given a partial build sheet with the car which matches the windshield VIN number. Should I be concerned and was I scammed?

The number on the trim tag (body number plate) on the top line after the 136xx an dassemlby plant is the BODY number and has nothing to do with the VIN. In fact, the body number should be on the build sheet, block 9 or 24 depending on the plant.

See

for examples.

Probably no reason for concern. Hopefully the portion of your build sheet contains the VIN. It is probably in the upper right hand corner.

Guys,

Thanks for your help. I did check the build sheet and there was the body number as you pointed out. whew...what a relief. I had so many problems with the seller that I thought this was jus another headache.

Thanks again for the welcome...

Resq...

I am located in Toms River. Just bought the car two weeks ago and had it trucked up from Kentucky. Four days later...the engine blows...
Now I am rehoning my skills as a mechanic again. Patiently waiting for my new GM crate 454 to arrive.
