Can someone help me with de-coding this:
ST69 13637 KAN 270233BDY
TR-795 57 57PNT
03A 05544

The engine has the # T0312YP9765 under the alternator and the # 3940946 on the driver side value cover ledge.

I'm trying to determine if a car I purchased from a dealer as a 69 SS396/325 M21 12bolt 3.90 is a real SS or clone. I do know the color has been changed, the car has power drum brakes vs power disc brakes. Its supposed to be #'s matching but the car was orginally an automatic. I belive it's a clone but need to be sure. I paid good money and I'm pissed that the dealer has misrepresented the car. Please help!!

Here's the information on the cowl tag.

ST69 13637 - 69 Malibu 2 door hardtop V8.
KAN - Kansas City assembly plant.
TR795 - Green bench seat interior.
57 57 PNT - Fathom Green paint, no vinyl top.
03A - Build date, March, 1969, first week.

I'll try to source that engine information as well. No way to tell from the Cowl Tag if it is an SS. Hope this helps.

In 1969 all 396 cars came with power front disc brakes as standard equipment.

The engine code of T0312YP breaks down as follows:

T - Tonowanda Engine Plant.
0312 - Engine assembly date of March 12, year????
YP - I'm afraid my source book does not show this code for any engine between 1966 and 1969, unless it's a truck motor. Maybe somebody else can help here

Just by the assembly date of March 12 it's obvious the engine is not original. Even if that was March 12, 1969 the engine was assembled after the build date of the car. Also, all SS's in 1969 came standard with power disc brakes.

I'm not a big fanatic of "Matching Numbers" and "Original Engine" unless it was relayed to me that way when I bought it and then I found out later such was not the case. This appears to be what has happened here. Just my opinion based on the information you have posted.

Thanks guys for the help. I'm convice that the car is not an original SS car. It's a nice looking car but I but it thinking its an orginal SS and I can sell for what I paid because I'm not in the habit of taking advantage. I've really learned a lot over the past several months about buying classic cars and this forum is the best. Thanks!!!
