Hi all.. does anyone know what would cause your ps fluid to get so hot it melts your dipstick? My PS pump was making some noise so I figured I would replace it, I picked up another one and after install it decided to boil out the top melting the dipstick.. I run a hydroboost brake system but that should have nothing to do with this.. Never seen it or heard of this happening.

Thanks

Sounds like that replacement PS pump came from the junkyard, and it's had the meat.
Check the fluid for metal fallout. I'd take it back to where ever you bought it and ask for another.

And flush the fluid out of the system, if you can, before you put a 'good' pump on, or imediately after.

Did you bleed the air out of the system? It is recommended that when a pump is installed that you lift the front wheels off the ground and cycle the steering lock to lock to purge any air out.

Unless you are autocrossing or stuck in a snowbank and gunning your motor at full lock turn, you should never heat your steering fluid to the point that you melt your capstick.

You have a major restriction and the pump is generating high pressure and heat. Your pump and steering fluid is toast.

Your problem is not just "air in the system".
