Just wondering how to read the VIN number. I found one link on here which gives the model number and what it originally had in it. Anyway to tell where it came from, more detail? Thanks,
Phil

Well I guess the full reports arent free. Which is what Im looking for. Carfax offeres detailed ones for $20, looks like a nice thing to have for the car.

I assume you are talking about a Chevelle. Carfax does not go back that far.

It is fairly Simple. The first digit is the make, in the case of the Chevelle it will be a 1 for the Chevrolet Division. The second and third digits are the series This will vary depending on year. The fourth & fifth digits identify the body style (2 door, 4 door, sedan, conv., or station wagon). The sixth digit tells you the year in which it was built. The seventh digit tells you the assembly plant and the last six digits tell you the production sequence number. The only thing the VIN tells you about what the car had in it is if it were a V-8 or a 6 banger unless it is a 72, then it will state what engine was in it.
