sheet metal plant stamping id and date code, not a VIN

The stamping plant used the car model to id the panels.

The VIN is never stamped onto the car. Its attached to the door pillar (a-pillar) or the top of dash.

A VIN derivative (6N123456 and 16N123456 1968 up) is stamped on the engine, trans, frame and body in areas that are not easily seen. Often called "COP VINS" as they were there to help law enforcement and insurance investigators ID parts from stolen vehicles. Any alteration of these numbers was against the law, so they had you both ways. As you can see from my examples, the model number is not used as part of the VIN derivative.

On my 64 it's the model#, Not the Vin
5637 should be for a 2dr Malibu.
I have been told the VIN is on top frame, Near the drivers door.

I posted another thread a few days ago and they said the VIN # would be there? Is the VIN anywhere other than the door pillar?

There may be a stamping of the VIN on the firewall behind the heater box. This is true on 68-72, not 100% sure about 64-67.
