: Only 6 L78 convertibles

I am looking at a 70 SS396 L78 convertible. As a Corvette collector, I am tired of hearing the word "RARE". I am being told only (6) L78 convertibles exist. I know from Vettes, convertible options are almost impossible to document.

Any advice ???

One source I have, which is commmon on this board, gives a "guesstimate" of ZERO produced. Again, this was a guesstimate and is not meant to be taken as gospel. At this time there is probably no definitive answer for your question. Any that might have been built would indeed be rare.

Welcome to the board by the way graemlins/waving.gif

One was recently auctioned on Ebay and ended at $144,000 and didn't meet the reserve. I would have to see a built sheet or some other proof that it is a L78 car. All the cowl info will tell you is that it is a V8 car.

Aces1 had a nice red on red '70 L78 convertible, its at Floyd Garretts now I think. They are few and far between.

They do exist and 6 seems to be the number thrown around but how does anyone know how many are still in existence? I'm sure it's not many. No way to know how many truly produced. Dan Carr poster gives a guesstimate of 46.

The one on ebay referenced in this link was from a dealer, Northern Illinois Classic Auto Brokers. They show it at their website and indicate they have several buildsheets on the car. I believe this same dealer had an L89 version listed a couple years ago....think it was Cortez Silver. Barrett Jackson has also sold a couple (one white one and one black one) within the last couple years as well. They both indicated having buildsheets also.

I would certainly say it is a rare car.

Well Dick, I need a kick in the backside. I was looking at the L89 figures on that poster rather than the L78 columns when I made my above quote. I actually checked it again and again as zero really didn't make a lot of sense. Guess I need stonger glasses  graemlins/clonk.gif

I'm sticking to responses on 69's in the future :D

Don -

You know how you can tell when you're getting old? When you bend down to pick something up and your mind says "Is there something else I can be doing while I'm down here?"

If that's the biggest mistake you make today you'll be miles ahead of me. By the way, I find that a flashlight and a magnifying lens work well. ;)
