: UPS Charges from US to Canada
wark67 Apr 5th, 09, 12:16 PM Guys
I sold some parts to a member here, and he lives in Canada. He did not send me any money for shipping, but my ad said that buyer pays shipping. I want to be fair and get his purchase to him, but I dont want to be stuck with shipping.
When I went to UPS website, the best rate that I can come up with is 169 USD. Is there a cheaper way to send parts to Canada? Is there a way to send it, and i dont have to pay freight, and he can pay for COD? I have never sent anything to Canada, so am asking for your help.
Thanks, Brad PS....My zip is 58103 and his postal code is L9M-1y1
JWagner Apr 5th, 09, 12:17 PM I would ask at your local Post Office. These shipping rates are highly unpredictable, so rule out nothing.
wark67 Apr 5th, 09, 12:25 PM I will do that.
The weight is 42 lbs, and the box measures 28x13x12
firstyearchevelle Apr 5th, 09, 12:34 PM Take the box to the post office, they can give you an exact shipping quote. I have never had any luck getting the UPS shipping calculator to be accurate it's always way more than when you actually take the package down for a quote.
CDN SS Apr 5th, 09, 12:36 PM Brad ...... I would not ship til he sends you the money for shipping, get a rate "ground " and advise him the amount then it gets item to him he will have to pay the broker fees and taxes in canada ...... where is he ?? .the easiest way / cheapest for you and he is via USPS .how much does this part weigh , what is it ......... the real cost for the buyer is not the shipping that cost is pretty consistant in US and canada ......... but if shipped by UPS they charge a very high fee for broker fees ( if he knows what he doing he can clear customs himself to avoid that fee but alot dont know how to do mthat ) and of course the buyer will pay our canadian sales taxes on the amount ...... I buy lots of stuff from US and sell stuff to US ..... PM me I can help if this guy prepared to treat you fair ....... I going down to pick up parts in pembina soon Maybe I can save him some shipping
wark67 Apr 5th, 09, 12:53 PM PM sent Bill
Thanks!!!!!!!
bcice Apr 5th, 09, 2:17 PM Send it regular usps and if it is Chevelle parts, mark on the box that it contains Classic or Antique car parts. That way there is no duty. Only taxes that the buyer will have to pay when he gets it. I bought 80 dollars worth of parts from Ground Up a few years back and they sent it UPS. They charged me more to ship it and do the brokerage than the parts were worth! I have stuff sent by regular mail all the time. It takes longer but it is well worth the savings
dyno jonn Apr 5th, 09, 3:41 PM UPS will charge the person in Canada a rediculously high (in my opinion) handling charge for collecting the taxes and fees on the item. I will only send stuff by USPS to Canada, because they only charge about $5.00 per package.

speedracer77 Apr 8th, 09, 11:25 PM I only live an hour from the border, and have a post office box in the U.S. Saves me a ton to get packages from my dad, parts, etc. sent there. Only crappy thing is some companies won't ship USPS.
BlueSS454 Apr 8th, 09, 11:43 PM You can send it as a "gift" to avoid the duites and taxes. In no way shape or form should it cost $170 to send something to Canada UPS. I've sent decent size boxes there via ground service for $25. I just checked...for UPS Standard service (Ground), a 15 lb package from your zip code to the Canada postal code is $27.

me too, this is very effective for Canadians close to the border.

Don't need to lie for us up here in Canada, we know we are screwed by our own Government. Canada post also rapes us compared to USPS. Just send by USPS the buyer pays the fees. :)
PS when I import stuff to the US for shipping by USPS (to avoid Canada Post), the US Government takes $10.70 total for all packages. Canadian revenue agency is out of control.
CDN SS Apr 9th, 09, 12:05 PM GUYS ..... There is NO duty on auto parts coming into Canada country of origin US .... al you pay is GST and your local PST on the cdn dollar value AND if by Fedex / UPS a broker fee .high .........you can have it shipped via UPS .....hold for customer to clear customs yourself .to avoid the fees ... USPS / canada Post .still pay the same taxes but the broker fee is very small .......anything valued ( in cdn funds) lower than around 20.00 comes right thru Gifts have a max value I beleive before you have to pay taxes
speedracer77 Apr 10th, 09, 11:31 AM It's not the duty that kills you, it's the brokerage fees. Unfortunately for me UPS does not see fit to have a depot anywhere near Eastport Idaho where I am crossing the border. :(
Anyone living in Eastport want to sign for my packages?

I guess that works Bill if you live close to a UPS office but when you live 400 miles from one it is just not pratical. I guess I could have said to put on the box it contains "automotive" parts, but everything I have had shipped from the U.S. has been for the Chevelle so I have had them write Classic or Antique parts on the box and not yet has one been opened for inspection.
As for $27 dollars to ship Tom, you are probably correct. That will be shipping charged. Then the buyer gets the nice little surprise of another bill for brokerage fees when the package arrives! In my case it was 80 dollars. The cheapest way to get stuff from the U.S. into Canada in my opinion is USPS. and I have done lots of it not only personal but for the company as well.

Terry is right. UPS is the one who is ripping them off with their "brokerage fees". USPS is the only way to ship to Canada, and you can use the long number on the upper left (just under the bar code) on the customs form to check to see if was delivered. Sort of like delivery confirmation, but for free when shipping from the US.
