Was there a GM part number that applied only to the 1966 oil pan and, if so, what is the number?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob Thought this was already answered? (http://www.chevelles.com/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=005590)

I did get that info, but there's a 1966 Chevelle big block oil pan for sale and it's listed as an original GM "never been used" part, but they give the part number as 12495360. They may have just pulled this number out from their hat, but I thought it was worth asking.
Thanks

Enter the number here under part search and see it is a current BB issue pan and has more items included

The pan alone will not fit without the other parts to modify the engine, so the pan is useless by itself.

GM PART # 12495360
CATEGORY: Engine Oil Pan/Reinforcement
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $186.63
OUR PRICE: $130.64
DESCRIPTION: PAN KIT
This 4-quart oil pan kit is for all 1991 and later Gen V and Gen VI 454 and 502ci engines. This pan should fit most early model Chevelle and Camaro vehicles. The kit includes the 4-quart oil pan, four main cap bolts P/N 10106461, oil pump screen P/N 3955281, oil level tube P/N 329231, oil level gauge P/N 3989391, and oil pan gasket P/N 10106407. Technical Notes: Oil pan is not serviced separately
Oil pan is not serviced separately means you cannot just buy the pan because it won't fit without the other parts, so what is being sold on ebay is only part of what you need to use this on an early model Chevelle and not worth buying IMO.

The original part number for a 65-66 Chevelle 396 oil pan according to my October 65 parts book is 3889384. I think this would also be the same part used on 67 Chevelles. The 65 -67 big block pans had an extra bolt hole at the bottom below the timing cover. The timing covers for these same years are unique because they have a weld nut at the bottom of the cover for a bolt to help secure the pan to the timing cover through the extra hole in the oil pan.

The 3889384 part number is not listed in a 1975 Price Schedule that I own, so it was either discontinued prior to that or the number changed to a service replacement part with another number. I don't have any later Chevelle parts books to check if there was another part number available after the first one was discontinued.

Parts history dated 1990 shows 3889384 as discontinued, no part replacement. Gone, never to be produced by GM ever again.

So what if one buys the pan and replaces the timing cover with a later one...wouldn't that work as long as the correct pickup and gasket were used with this pan? Wouldn't be concours correct for a 66 (no center bolt) but for a show car, couldn't the head and a few threads of a bolt be tacked in place? smile.gif

The big issue with the 12495360 pan is that it is designed for a Gen V or VI big block which have one piece rear seals, and will not fit a Mark IV big block. Mark IV big blocks have a 2 piece rear seal. The 12495360 is designed for people who want to put a new GM crate engine in their early Chevelle or Camaro.

A later Mark IV pan that will fit the Chevelle can be used on the 65 - 67 big block and the extra bolt added as Dale suggests. But adding the bolt is not necessary.

Thanks a million; as always I am awed by your knowledge. I am getting a '67 (per seller) Chevelle oil pan. I am not sure about the bolt issue, but I will report back on what it looks like when I get it. I would like to get a "correct" 1966 Chevelle oil pan, but I think a '67 will do.
Thanks,
Bob

I've never owned a '66 and didn't know there was a difference until this thread...we all learn something new. :D

I went with a Milodon 'stock' pan on my 67 just because Chevrolet was out of them and it was only $89 from Summit (#MIL-30710) and I was replacing oil pump/shaft/pickup and some other stuff anyway.
