: Engine Decoding

I recently purchased a 1970 Chevelle SS 454. I know the engine is not original and am having trouble determining what is actually is as I can not see the conventional engine suffix on the right/front pad. The engine has the rectangular port heads and the Winters "snowflake" intake manifold. The numbers on the front pad are:

T1129IV E7124205

Can anyone shed some light on this or give me some hints on what further items I can look at?

Also, how can I identify what the heads are? Identifying numbers???

Thanks!!

You have a 1967 Impala engine

T1129IV
T - Tonawanda Engine Plant
11 - Nov
29 - Day
IV - 396-325 hp with TH400 Trans, 4-bbl carb, RPO L35

E7124205
E = Assembly Plant code BUT none are coded E, You misread this. I also think you have the E7 transposed, should be 7E124205.
7 - Model 1967
124205 - Last 6 digits from Impala's VIN. The 24,205 full size car assembly at this plant.

I also have a 67 396 325 hp from a 67 impala with a TH400 Trans :7J130952, TI006IV. The engine code is clearly stamped with an I in it, but I beleive it was ment to be a 1. That would make it a Tonawanda Engine built on Oct. 06 1967. This motor came out of a one owner car.

Yes the I and 1 mean the same thing when its in the date field. Ifs hard to distinguish the dies apart. We used these same kinds of dies to stamp our survey marks and many a times the I was used as a 1. Some just never new the difference.
