OK gas mileage and hot rods an oxymoron right? anyways, seriously though , how do some of you manage this?

I'm able to get a best of 10mpg so far on a mild 350:
dual plane intake
9.5:1 "186" 2.02/1.60 heads
crane 278 energizer
edle 650 carb &
1 5/8 headers
running to a 7004r tranny with 3.08 's
(albeit the lock is not working)

I had a setup like yours without the 700r4 and was getting about 13-15 miles in the city, with a 350/350 3:42 rear end. Have you played with themetering rods/jets on the eldelbrock carb? What location is the pump arm on. You should see at least 15mpg with a mild 350 and a 700r4. I have a budy that gets almost 18 in the city, it is a 67 camaro though alot lighter than our chevelles.

I had a strong 350 in my chevelle that I would consider past mild but it was backed with a th-350 and 2.73 gears with 14" 245/50/14 tires and I consistently got 18-20 mpg.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't get 20 or so on the highway. No car gets good mileage in town, not even new cars. If you can start and drive without the choke when cold, way too rich. Chevys should be real cold natured to be jetted right. Takes time, but like the other guys say, tinker with the jetting. Check timing and be sure vacuum advance is working. tom

WoW!You mean to tell me my 70 LS6 Chevelle with the rockcrusher and 4.10 gears is getting better gas milage then your 350.I average around 12mpg.I agree with the rest of the guys.Jetting,timing,and or vacuum advance

I get 9-11 with my 69 350/300 with a powerslide Uh pwr glide transmission. I have to look at a few things though (just got it in april) and have not done much with it.
Wish i could get 12mpg..

If your buying gas at the same place....buy a different brand, different station. I buy premium gas at one local station and I get 9-10 mpg....at another one I get 12-14 mpg. Quality of fuel will make a difference. Own a 92 chevy lumina, go out of town 125 miles it uses 1/2 tank to get there...fill up and
drive home (against the wind, uphill) and can drive 125 miles on 1/8 of a tank. Just a thought....

Use a fuel additive, like Berryman B-12 Fuel Injector cleaner, since the chemicals dissolve carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.

Here's a few tips for increased fuel economy:
*spreadbore carb
*electronic ignition
*radial tires
*alloy rims
*high rearend ratio (numerically low)
*closed element air cleaner
*vacuum readings of 18 inches/Hg or higher
*keeping the RPM below 2000 (during cruise)
*properly jetted carb
*platinum tipped spark plugs
*overdrive tranny (e.g. 700R4 swap)
*low-stall torque converter
*synthetic motor oil

When refueling, use a brand name that is reputable, like Chevron. Another thing is that cheap fuel from independent manufacturers can hinder fuel economy.
