I see these from time to time and can see no on-the-level reason someone would want to buy these. Can someone tell me what good reason there is to but this item?

Only two reasons I can think of to buy a trim tag or Fisher Body plate.

1. Simply being a collector or doing research. I research the body plates but I use photographs (less expensive) than trying to collect (and pay for) the plates themselves.

...or more than likely...

2. To 'enhance' (fake) a car's pedigree. From 64 to 68 Chevelles, the ever popular SS trim tag will help fake a super Sport if one doesn't look closely at the VIN plate. Also some 64 to 67 assembly plants put some option codes on the plate such as trans type, bucket seats, console, A/C, etc. that could easily be added but the body plate 'verifies' the option. Not as relevant on 69 and 72 Chevelles since the SS was an option on the Malibu (136xx) model but maybe seat type and/or color denoted on the tag might help a sale.

I don't know of any state that requires the body plate to be correct or even intact. I've seen many a custom smoothed firewall with the tags gone.

VIN plates are another story however. I think it's illegal to sell or replace those unless the replacement is done by the state. In fact, I think it's even illegal to have possession of the special rivets unless you're approved by a state for repair reasons.
