I'm looking at buying and restoring a 1965 true "138675" Chevelle convertible. I think most everything is original but maybe the motor? I'm trying to figure out what options and motor came with it? It has the 327 emblems.

I've looked at the references on the data tag and still can't figure out the true details on this tag?

First line: "03B 139 4"

Second line: "ST 65 13867 BAL 2491 BODY"

Third line: "TR 714 W1 PAINT"

I understand this car was built in March, 2nd week in Baltimore. Inside was black with buckets and vinyl.

What is the outside color supposed to be. It is Mist Blue now. I've been told that was the original color. I don't see the "2D" to represent this on the tag? What does the "139" mean?

Any help appreciated. I'm about to possibly buy this car and I'm trying to figure out what's all original.

You are right as far as the date and seats go. Unfortunately, Baltimore is one of the plants that didn't put much info on the body plates. The paint code is W1 where "W" is Glacier Gray (supposedly a SS only color), "1" is a white convertible top (Mist Blue would indeed be coded as D1 or D2 depending on top color), and the "138xx" on the body plate is a 90%-95% assurance it's a SS car but I have examples of some body plates vs. VIN plates that don't match. The definitive solution is the VIN plate...it should read 138xx to assure a SS car and in the case of a '65, 138xx only identifies a V8 engine but not the size.

The "2491" after BAL is the Fisher Body unit number but is of little significance UNLESS you find a build sheet (unlikely) to match it to. The number "139" is probably the job number that appears on other assembly line paperwork that would identify various trim/interior options. The other number "4" is probably more towards the top right and I don't think anybody knows yet what this number is for.

Check my ChevelleStuff (http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm) site and look under 1965 Chevelles for more coding info. There are also numerous examples of body plates (trim/cowl tags) for Baltimore and other assembly plants for comparison.
