: Engine decode

I was hoping someone can help me to decode the engine in my 1969 SS. The number stamped on the front right side pad is E0A57940. I have not been able to find anything on this at all. All numbers I have checked in the past on other engines have had a three letter suffix. It does appear that there could be a partial number or letter at the front. There is only a partial mark at the bottom that is circular which I am wondering if this could be a C (CE0A57940) which would maybe make this a warranty engine. This is a big block and is supposed to be a 325/396. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Nothing in the code will tell you anything about what the engine is.

CE0A57940 is a service replacement part

CE - Chevrolet Engine (component)
0 - Means its was manf. for the 1970 model year vehicles (but could have been in stock for many years from then)
A - ID's what it was, a partial engine, bare block, fitted block or what ever. I can' find that info at the moment.
57940 means that Tonawanda made it. They started numbering their engine parts at 49999.

Contrary to wide spread belief, rarely was a complete engine installed for most repair. They only replaced what needed to be replaced and did not toss good heads, oil pans, water pumps etc

thank you very much for the information. Will ther be any numbers on the engine anywhere that will tell what it is as far as HP and CI.

thanks

NO, there is not way of tell what you have.

On the back of the block there is a casting number and that will tell you what it was cast to be, i.e. 396, 454 etc.

But service engines do not have any codes to tell you what they are because they were made to be generic and fit many applications. If the car was a 325 hp model and the engine was replaced under warranty, thats what it will be. If on the other hand the customer was paying, it could be anything.

Thanks again for all your help. The casting number does tell me the block is a 396.
