Hi,
I'm looking for good resources with "tips" to aid in identifying authentic SS Chevelles (66-72). I understand the VIN & Trim Tags do not identify SS models (for most years). After some investigation, it appears that many of the restoration publications available contain quite a bit of inaccurate information. Anyone have a good recommendation?
Thanks,
Larry

My advice.... You found the best resource by stopping by Team Chevelle. There is a tremendous amount of talent, skill, and experience on this site. Use the SEARCH Function as well, most topics have been discussed. I know you are likely looking for a "BOOK" but finding one that will give you information on anything more than a GENERAL basis and be accurate... well, as you have found out, it can be difficult. :(
Ask specific questions here and you will likely get responses that you can take to the bank. though I will caution you, don't always settle for the ONE response you get, see if others will confirm it.

Here's a source (http://www.chevelles.com/shop/ss_ident.html) on this site which may help Larry.
As Mike above has mentioned, just ask and you will get the answers you need. Good luck.

1964 through 68 SS models CAN be identified by the VIN. Remember that the 64 and 65 SS was a trim option and could be ordered with a V8 or 6-cyl. The 66 to 68 SS model included the 396 engine and can be identified by the 13817/37/67 on the VIN. For 1969 to 1972, the only SURE way to identify an ORIGINAL one is with paperwork. The one exception is 1972 when Chevelles had the engine size as part of the VIN. The 454 engine (code "W") mandated the SS option.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for an SS to restore; hopefully a '69 (but I'm somewhat open to the year), which is the reason for my question. I have found some incomplete cars (no motor/trans), whith some rust, which are possibilites. I'm debating whether to hold out for a "complete" rust free car and spend more money. I'm not in any hurry, but the prices aren't getting any lower. These cars seem to be drying up fairly quickly.

Canadian built Chevelles can be identified by a (1) as the seventh digit of the vin number. True Canadian built 70 SS can be identified by the RPO Z25 (396)or Z15 (454) on the cowl tag. If you are lucky and buy a Canadian built Chevelle you can get documentation from GM Canada to authenticate that it's a true SS.
