: NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE on title
biwig Jun 10th, 04, 9:22 PM Hi guys, looking for your input.I am looking at a 70 chevelle ss 396 match#s all the way trans, and rear w/build sheet ,however title states actual mileage unknown.should this effect my decision to buy the car.It doesn't bother me but will it hurt resale when time comes. It seems to me more important that it has documents and #s match.I'd like your imput.Bear in mind it's NOT a salvage title just unknown miles. Thanks in advance.
MalibuMike70 Jun 10th, 04, 9:29 PM I'd buy it. In Ohio(I'm not sure about recently), if the car went over 100,000 miles they(DMV) wrote "not actual". I am not sure of NOW but that is how Ohio USED to be. I am sure they track actual now. If the numbers are correct, I'd buy it. A numbers matching 70, I don't think you will lose money. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
BillsCamino Jun 10th, 04, 10:02 PM I don't know where you're located but in Georgia, anything over 10 years old, true vehicle mileage in not accounted for on a title at transfer.
elcamino Jun 11th, 04, 7:34 AM Thats because the laws the made this part of the title records came along long (1990's) after the car. So its impossible to know the actual miles on a car that predates these laws by 20 yrs that changed hands numerous times. They rarely recorded mileage in any sales transactions.
Will it hurt the value, not in any way I can see.
136679ss Jun 12th, 04, 2:35 AM most states in the union have mileage exempt clauses for cars of a certain age and older, this should not affect your decision to purchase, because unless you have documentation to prove actual miles acrued, the actual mileage would be considered as over mechanical limits, unless the title stated (not actual mileage) which simply means the odometer had been changed sometime in that vehicles life, and would usually have a disclosure signed and filed with the state it was registered in at the time.
LeoP Jun 14th, 04, 4:45 PM I think in Md, there is an "exceeds mechanical limitations" phrase on the title.
Bacchus Jun 15th, 04, 6:49 AM In Wisconsin there are two choices "Exceeds Mechanical Limits" which the owner has to physically check. Then there is "Mileage Exempt" which is what they put on all cars more than 10 years old. If it is an in-state purchase and the title can be exchanged over the counter, you can talk them into putting the mileage on the title for older cars. But, if you do an out-of-state transaction (bring the car in from somewhere else) or if you want to have collector or hobby plates put on the car, you have to mail in the paperwork to the state HQ and they WILL NOT put the mileage on the title for cars over 10 years old.
I wouldn't worry about it.
