Need some help from gurus. Where would I typically find the partial VIN stamped on the block for a (3955272) block cast April 29 69 and assembled on 23 May 69? I have a reasonably clear application stamp: "T0523JD". This stamp matches the POP. But I see no partial VIN on the same pad. Also do not see one back by the oil galley. I have yet to remove paint on pad to look for broach marks.
Thanks,
Sam

Checked the oil filter area rough casting and no partial VIN was found. Does anyone have experience with engine blocks that were not stamped with VINs i.e. someone forgot?

If you cannot find it then you can't prove original engine. It was the law that these be stamped and there is not way to prove it was omitted on one car of millions. With so many people trying to pass of cars as original, no VIN will be a negative if matching numbers is of concern.
Are you sure its not there? It will be stamped in a vertical position just up from oil filter. I don't have an image to share of one but they can be hard to see at times especially if engine is in the car.

There are cases where the VIN number did not get stamped. I have seen a few real blocks(not decked) that were stamped with the date code, but no VIN to be found anywhere on the block. It seems to be really rare on GM blocks, but fairly common on Fords. Like Mike said, it was federally mandated, yet it was not regulated by the feds.

I have a 70SS 454 that was built in canada that HAD (before decking!! argh!) the correct T1230CRQ on the engine pad, correct date code (upside down), and so on, but no code above the oil filter.
I haven't worked with enough metal to notice if it was ground off and painted or if its just smoother there for another reason but, its not there. I can't imagine my car was faked though, with the matching trans and rear, the fact it wasn't registered since 82 when I bought it, and it looked it it had been underwater since right about then when I picked it up in '94..
Maybe its because it was canadian built (but sold in RI to a buyer in Mass IIRC) I have no VIN there?
Its a real buster to have to deal with that, the fact I never found a protecto plate or build sheet, but atleast I have the GM of canada stuff.

The 327 in our old 69 Impala convertible had no VIN stamping on the engine. Had the build plant, date, and application code stamped on the pad behind the alternator, but that's it. It just got missed on some cars.
