Found my punch card under the back seat of my '69 Malibu. Does it tell me any more info than the cowl tag does? Will it tell the original motor size?

I just found two punch cards in my rear seat (69 Chevelle). It appears to have info just for the seat color and type seat. I don't have any other documentation to compare to. I'm also interested to know if there is any other info on these cards.

I would speculate that the info on the cards varies from plant to plant, or at least country to country. My Oshawa-built '67 has a 'Line 100' tag hog-ringed to the springs of the rear seat base that listed all five options that my car came with. Curiously it listed the seat itself as being for both a 13517 (Chevelle) or 73517 (Beaumont) model.

The info is contained in the punch holes. They generated the build sheets from those cards.

Take a look HERE (http://members.core.com/~faldrich/leeds.html) at some punch cards.

I´m just wondering if there has been any research in punch cards. Is it possible to decode them ?

Punch Cards

Hold the card long way and the first row of numbers across are zeros, the second row are ones, the third row are twos, etc.

Then where your card says 13667 55 (for example like el caminos link above) you can match up the punches - the 1 is a punch in the second row, the 3 is a punch in the 4th row, the 6's are punches in the 7th and eighth row, etc

Well just in case that wasn't too clear ... you can try this

MikeJ,

There are some printed numbers on the card I found, which group of numbers should match my vin#? thanks!

And to think this was state of art in computer systems.

In 1949, Popular Mechanics boldly asserted that "computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons."
Actually, there have been a lot of embarrassed experts when it comes to assertions about computers. The editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall in 1957 said, "I have travelled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last out the year."
Commenting on the microchip, an engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM said, "But what . . . is it good for?" This was in 1968. By 1977, the chairman and founder of Ken Olson expertly demonstrated his prescience by exclaiming, "There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."

Can someone post a pic of their card somewhere - longest side down with notched corner in the top left of the picture - and then I can probably translate the punches into letters / numbers.

The vin is probably there somewhere - the engine and all that stuff are likely codes

Mike J,
Check out the link that El Camino posted. It shows both sides of the punch cards.

The card EL Camino posted is already decoded -

if you look at the card on the right of the picture .. all the way on the right ... reading from top to bottom you see 13667 755 02... coffee stain .... 2724B 06B2

that is what the punches say - that's it ...

Yes, you see the option codes as well, B22 D33 etc... the printed numbers are what the puches stand for. I talked to a guy that worked with these cards back in the 70's. My question is how to prove the punch card BELONGS to a particular car. I can't tell that any group of numbers on the above card
http://members.core.com/~faldrich/leeds.html
match the vin or serial # on the build or broadcast sheet. How do you match the card with a car?

You can find 327248 on the card - hard to read but looks to be

136677550262 2363272481622.....
