: Did you ever give something away and then found out it was worth money
LKSV8 Apr 2nd, 09, 8:38 AM Hey guys did you ever give something away and then find out later it was worth some money, i have , on more than one occasion. i am a big music fan and collector of stuff. anyway years ago i had a numbered and embossed, mint condition limited edition of the beatles WHITE album . i was Never a beatles fan , more stones, I gave it to a pal of mine. i also gave away free 2 very limited editions of the beatles greatest hits , each were double albums on vinyl, one set was red the other blue. i read recently that the blue and red vinyl albums are slling for $750 each, and an original White album was over$1000. bummer that, as i said i dont care for the beatles but at least they made my buddies happy.:D:D
ive been collecting David Bowies stuff since way back in the early 70s. i mean every single release. thats 7 inch singles, 12 inch singles, picture discs, shapped discs, coloured vinyl, vinyly albums, cds , dvds, video tapes, books etc . liz said if i sold them i could get another chevelle. cos when i go to the house in the sky she WILL sell them :(.
i also gave away free, a 1963 chevy nova:sad:. i was saving to get married at the time and it would have been a money trap. it was very straight, had a straight 6 engine, body was good , needed some bits n pieces done. i had nowhere to store it anyway.
often wondered where it ended up.
67shovel Apr 2nd, 09, 8:48 AM I was building a Cobra replica and needed some headlights. My buddy says he has some old Marshal Ampalux (SP) that he used to run on his street bikes in the late 70's. When he brought them over I wasn't very impressed as that had flat glass. I bolted them in and then thought we would google them and to get the story on them. Turns out they are super rare and worth up to $400 a piece.......if you can find them. My buddy took a hard glup when we read that. I did toss he a big chunk of change after we read that.
Elcoman Apr 2nd, 09, 8:50 AM I tossed away a Raleigh Chopper Bicycle when I was 14, the rear hub broke. The local bike shops didnt have the parts to fix, nor could they get them. I was a regular at the shops, because I was a huge BMXer. So I knew if they said no they cant get them, then I was out of luck.

cobaltchev67 Apr 2nd, 09, 9:51 AM Nope, I usually know what stuff is worth when I give it away:D. I gave away a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit a couple of years ago. Bought it from Dad for $200, put another $200 in to get it running well. I got hit on I-5, then 2 days later something just quit like the $250 fuel pump the previous owner put in when I was on I-405.
I put 20,000 miles on it in 10 months driving it to flight school, so I didn't feel bad giving it away:noway:....not to mention it was a bright yellow convertible w/black top which leaked, burned oil, and was used up. Fun while it lasted though but needed it out of the driveway:D
SixActual Apr 2nd, 09, 10:03 AM Sure thing, and I still regret it. Hundreds of Military patches, badges and pins, arm bands, and flags, including World War ll uniforms and equipment. At the time, I was aware it was worth "something," but the popularity and prices all of that Military stuff has exploded since then.
All I can do now is think about it! :D
I did sell a 1962 Corvette for a peanuts, which I bought for a song, but it required a lot of work and cash. Do I regret it? Rarely, but do I think about that as well from time to time.
Thank God I had the common sense to keep my 1970 Chevelle SS though. :D
Life goes on! :beers:
RAMBO Apr 2nd, 09, 10:14 AM about 10 years ago, a friend of mine who played guitar gave me a Fender squire stratocaster. it was hot pink, but it played and sounded good. I was just goofing around with it, so free was awesome. I bought a little peavy amp, and another friend sold me a fancy digital pedal setup.
fast forward to last year, the guitar and stuff had been in my closet for a couple years, never really learned to play, (once all the tabs got yanked from the internet, my interest went down).. so tried to sell it... $150 for everything... No interest...$100 for everything no interest... with brand new squires for about $150, hard to sell an old one with an ugly color.
Now all the ad's i ran, I hadn't bothered to put photo on the internet, only mentioned that it was hot pink.
I knew it was different than the other squires, because it had dual humbuckers, a funky trembalo bridge thingy, and the cord plugged into the back, instead of the side.
Anyway, i posted it one more time with a photo this time, at $50 for everything, jsut wanted it gone...
Apparently the photo did it, within 15 mins of posting the ad, my phone was ringing off the hook.
first guy was at my house within an hour and bought it...
Turns out it was a Floyd Rose edition "FAT STRAT" from the early 80's- and the ugly hot pink was super rare.
He reposted it on CL a few days later for $400 with all the details about what it really was.
Oh well, i can't complain, i got enough money to cover the cost of the amp & pedal out of it, so i was even.
:)
RAMBO Apr 2nd, 09, 10:20 AM Follow up story to that one...
In 2002 I bought a 69 camaro for my girlfriend to drive- $8500.
It was a pretty nice car- newer paint, nice interior, 307 motor... Was her daily driver.
by 2004 we broke up, i kept the car.
I owed money on it and was makiing payments, so i was in a big hurry to sell the car.
At the time, i had a 70 elcamino, a 67 merc monterey convertible, and the camaro.
Everyone told me to sell the elcamino or the mercury, keep the camaro. it was a good reliable driver- it would be cooler and worth more in the end....
But at the time, i said i wouuld feel weird keeping it..
Tried hard all summer and finnaly sold it for $9500 (i had quite a bit more into it by that time of course)
For whatever reason, later that year camaro prices skyrocketed.... within 6 months you couldn't have touched a car in the condition mine was for less than $12k. :(
JNorton Apr 2nd, 09, 10:27 AM I was, for reasons I can't recall, looking at Boom-Boxes on Ebay. I wasn't looking at buying one, I guess I heard that the old 80's boom-boxes are pulling some cash and I guess I wanted to see if one of my old ones would have been worth anything. One of these caught my eye, a JVC-something. I saw the picture and though of one my buddy had when we were in high school. I sent him the link and "is this the one you had and please I hope you still have this thing". They regularly go for $700 and up. Sure enough, he had it. The only problem, the tuner isn't working. He's going to get it fixed and unload it.
67RAT Apr 2nd, 09, 10:51 AM yes,I did,a 396/325 from a 69 ss camaro-I just gave it away-but really I knew what it was worth-and it was mid 1980s,seemed big blocks were as plentyful as small blocks-
funny thing is,guy I GAVE it to took it to the garage he had,set it on the floor-and took off the small chrome air cleaner and carb-and it sat there open intake for 6 months with shady people in and out all the time.
so he sells it(250.00) to a guy with a 66 chevelle, guy fires it up,only to hear horrible sounds.
well, turns out a screw got in a cyld, and lodged in and did a number-
so,of course, here comes the guy I GAVE it to,crying that I SCREWED him,and I put the screw there, but I knew I didnt-car run fine day before pulling it,hell the air cleaner was on when I pulled it,till he picked it up.
he died 2 years ago of cancer, but he died thinking I put the screw in there, even though it sat open,in his so called WORK bay for months-
see what you get when you help a friend in need???????

Beaux Apr 2nd, 09, 11:16 AM My virginity. I should put it up for sale to my middle school and high school teachers on Craigs list.
webfoot Apr 2nd, 09, 11:22 AM Michael Jordan rookie card back when I was 12 or so. I had myself convinced that basketball cards weren't worth anything, only baseball. What a monumental error!
SSx3 Apr 2nd, 09, 11:41 AM "Did you ever give something away and then found out it was worth money?"
Yup, more than once. I once gave away an old Martin D18 acoustic guitar only to realize later it was made in the 30's and worth 5 figures easy. I still have a few old guitars but don't plan on giving them away on a whim. Next was an 68 GT C/S(California Special) Lime gold Mustang it needed a bumper, lower valance and right fender it had a 351W under the hood and at the time I practically had to pay someone to take it as I was moving and didn't have room for it. I'm a believer in Karma the Mustang came back in the form of a much Rarer High Country Special. I'm still waiting on the Martin j/k lol it came back in the form a couple of awesome deals on two vintage Fender Stratocasters for my sons 20 and 11.
JWagner Apr 2nd, 09, 11:50 AM A stack of old 45rpm rock records. The Bill Haley and the Comets one (with the nice dust jacket) is looking for $180 on ebay . Also in the stack were Bo Diddley and others from the 50's. Oops.

In the opinion of "this Detective," :D that's considered Prostitution and Pandering. ;)
mudhog Apr 2nd, 09, 1:16 PM yep a girlfriend. we were engaged to marry but I just was not ready to settle down, I met the parents one time they flew down to texas to meet me and he said he would give us a house for a wedding present in upstate New York, that was the last straw I ain't moving to new york, never been but all I pictured was a big city (I live in the country) I broke it off but she begged for me to come back, I ended up with another girl, Her best friend who lives in Texas said her parents are mega rich the home in upstate new york was a 300acre horse farm that has been in several magazines, they own several ranches in 6 states and she was the only child. When they come to see me they had private body guards with them, I just thought they were some friends traveling with them. Oh well I'm happy now so it worked out good.

Now I don't feel as bad giving away my Military hardware and selling my '62 Corvette. Thanks much, Dennis! :beers:
Truly an uplifting story.......for me anyway.
Stay frosty, Dennis!
70 SS LS-5 Apr 2nd, 09, 1:46 PM Yep, I gave away a 70 Chevelle, 68 Nova and a 76 Camaro. They were cool cars but I needed the space and I didn't want to go through the hassle of selling them.
rbwjr325 Apr 2nd, 09, 1:53 PM Yeah,Money! People I LOANED it to decided it was a gift cause I never got it back.Funny, they never come around anymore.

A very common practice. Your friends are always around until you loan them some cash, then they disappear completely. Then if you accidently run into them somewhere, the first thing they tell you is, "I'll get the money I owe you on XXXXX." Of course, they never show up.
Chris R Apr 2nd, 09, 5:30 PM I made the mistake of marking my initials on the back of an almost entire set of 1984 Topps football cards. Which included the rookie cars of John Elway, Dan Marino, Eric Dickerson, etc. But this was around 1985 or 86. But all my friends knew those were going to be valuable cards even back then. I havent checked the value on an 84 Topps set lately but its been a few years since I last checked and the price was down back then. I believe its still affordable currently.
Im sure there are a lot of guys out here that cringe on all the Hot Wheels redline cars they destroyed, gave away, or traded only to find out thier value in todays market. I knew they would be worth money even back as far as the late 80s and got as many as I could. I dont have any big buck ones today but I still have them all. Maybe about 50 total.
The only story I have that really ticks me off to this day is about an old revolver, probably wild west era that my dad had which was a family heirloom handed down to him by his father (or grandfather which I forget). He ended up selling it for 200 dollars in the early 90s without telling any of us kids because my parents needed money for groceries. Not even hinting to any of us that they needed money. It wasnt until around the mid 90s, many years later that I even found out that gun was long since sold. I can only assume that gun is worth thousands now.
Beaux Apr 2nd, 09, 5:33 PM All my original star wars action figures, millenium falcon, etc....they all met a violent death when I was about 10....when I got my first firearm and found out how cool an accessory to play warfare that lighter fluid can be.
I still have all my cards but baseball and man they just arent worht what they used to be if anything at all. Rookie and college cards galore
savage71chevelless Apr 2nd, 09, 6:24 PM my brother in law broke up with a serious girlfriend, and less than 2 months later, her family won $14 million in the Virginia lottery. I still get a kick out of that
cessnarob Apr 2nd, 09, 7:54 PM Not that I know of..but as of this week I'm kicking myself...A guy tried to give me for $200 a 1968 BSA Spitfire..I had never heard of one before so I declined to go get it...my buddy up the road went to get it and now it's on E-Bay selling for over $500 with 4 days left and 50+ watchers because it was a limited edition of only a very few built...Kick, Kick,Kick :(

The 1st one my Buddy and I put a '51 Stude V-8 3-speed stick OD in back in '64.
The 2nd one was a gift from my F-i-L back in '67.

79943 Apr 2nd, 09, 10:35 PM "Give away" not exactly but how close to give away is this. 1975 (middle of first gas crunch) traded in an all original 1970 LS6 Chevelle (Fathom Blue, Pearl interior) on a 1975 Malibu Classic and got $700 trade in. No rust, no damage, ran great. Is that close enough to a give away?
jbarberggd Apr 2nd, 09, 10:43 PM How's this for close enough; in 1975 I sold my 69ss, L78, M22 4 speed, gauges, Daytona Yellow, black vinyl top, bucket seat, posi, etc. for $800 because I could't afford it and my new Datsun pickup at the same time. Been looking for it ever since.
bulb122 Apr 2nd, 09, 11:09 PM Not give away, but unknowingly sold for far less that it was worth....
12 years ago, I had a 50+ mile commute to work. My DD was a beat up camaro, and my 2nd vehicle was an 81 chevy truck. The camaro was dying, and I had to strat driving the truck everyday. It got 9mpg, and I couldn't afford to feed it, much less the rusted floor etc.... so I sold it to buy a FWD oldsmobile for the mileage and reliability. :clonk:
It was an 81 reg cab, one ton single rear wheel 4x4, with a warmed over 454. I found out later it was worth at least twice what I sold it for :( Took me 10 years to get another truck ('04 2500HD 4x4), but it still doesn't have that sweet 4 bbl roar of the 454, or the thunderous off idle torque. Man I still miss that truck :( Good memories though :D
