I have a 69SS that I purchased with no motor. I am trying to get a block that will match up to the cowl tag which is marked 09C ( I am making the assumption that this is 3rd week of September 1968 build date).

What block casting # should I be looking for, and what is considered a correct range of dates for my car?

I think your assumption regarding your car's build date is correct. I would be looking for a block with a cast date of July or August 68. Can't remember the correct casting number off the top of my head - hopefully someone else will chime in here.

For model year 1969 there were three different block castings used, two were 396CI and the other was 402CI. Yours would have definitely been one of the 396 castings as the 402's did not come into production until about June 0f 1969.

The most common 396 casting is 3955272, but I would estimate yours should have the early casting of 3935440.
