...we have not experienced any fools day backlash so far. However, the conficker is a problem. We had a taste of that a couple weeks ago. With over 900 PC's on out network around the world, it's difficult to ensure all are patched and have valid virus pattern files. The conficker strain is "usually" blocked by the MS08-067 critical update that came out around Nov 08'. However, we had some old Win 2000 PC's on the network that were bit because they aren't supporting patches for that OS anymore. Conficker makes huge numbers of TCP connections (thousands) to other PC's that may not be patched. It "enhances" the TCP services of Windows for it's own benefit to support it's port scanning and discovery payload. Not sure what the end result of these port scans and compromised PC's will bring...but I have a feeling this will eventually surface... stay patched and run spyware utils and virus scans regularly...

Various media outlets say that most of the more harmful viruses are paid for by organized crime syndicates in Eastern block countries and in Asia.

I bet they're making a mint somehow.

most of these are kids using available scripts just "tagging the walls" for fun... and I'm sure AV companies are involved too to generate sales...

Malwarebytes and AVG found a form of it on my system a week or so back, the file was "Downadup" or something like that, which I'm told is a variant of the conficker virus.

System is OK now.

I pretty sure that's this is no April Fool's joke brad. This worm can supposedly bypass your anti-virus programs and live, using your computer as a host. It can remain hidden in there for days, weeks and even months before it's activated and all your info is later compromised.

Here's a read from a NYC News TV Station:

Personally, I think the origin of this "worm" is in China somewhere, in an effort to undermine the stability of other Countries.

It not an april fools joke... its been around since last year. Tests confirm that conflicker came out of hibernation today and is actively listening to several domains for it's creators next instructions. If you have AV and MS up to date you should be fine. You'll know if your auto updates haven't been updating like they are supposed to. Mcafee has also released stinger_conficker to elminate the worm if you are infected.

Make sure you take this one seriously... the person[s] that wrote Conficker knows what they are doing, and they are watching to see what countermeasures are being taken, and then periodically releasing new, improved versions. Just because it hasn't attempted a payload download yet doesn't mean it won't someday.

Use the Conficker Eye Chart (http://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html) to see if you are infected. Conficker blocks access to most Antivirus web sites, so if you haven't noticed yours updating in a while, you might want to check for it.
