Might someone be able to help me decode the alluminum tag on this supposed 1970 TH 400 tranny that came out of possible a chevelle?
Top stamped numbers on tag -
353
Stamped numbers on bottom of tag -
70 CF 13580
These next numbers the owner said was cast into the housing of the trans-
"General MCTHF00RP"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
elcamino

70 CF 13580
70 model year
C - Chevrolet application
F - 402 Chevelle, Camaro or Nova
13580 - Serial number
There should be two sets of hand stamped codes into the case itself, near the front flange. If none are found, then its possibly a service trans., i.e. sold thru parts Dept. for replacement use.

What does the 353 number stand for? Would that be the date coding?

Most likely. Not seeing the codes etc means we have to guess.
Date codes for a trans are somewhat odd. The trans being a 1970 model year trans means the date code would have started counting on Jan 01, 1969 and continued into 1970. So 353 means it was the 353rd day of 1969 that the trans was manuf. not the date is was installed into a vehicle. So it was possible to find a date code in the 400's, 500's etc till they stopped producing for 1970 models transmissions and switched over to 1971 models, which would start at 001 on Jan 01, 1970. It was their clever way of tracking when a trans was manuf.

Elcamino,
Thanks for the info. If that is the case, that would be a perfect date coding to match the rest of my car.
