gUmBaLL68Malibu Feb 6th, 00, 4:33 PM Burnout till i let off
350 bored .40 over 282 dur cam with .490 lift, 10.5:1 flattop pistons, forged crank, street dominator with holley 750 vac up top. casting 882 heads with lots of work done to them.
Whoops forgot hp figures. I don't know exactly but i ran an 11.75 with 3.73 gears and street tires. so your guess is as good as mine. Very little chirp @ start

Wes Briscoe Feb 6th, 00, 4:55 PM My car generally doesn't roll in gear, sometimes it will. If I stop the pedal down from a dead stop the tires go up in smoke and i don't go anywhere. I think anything with over 400ft/lb of torque will do that. Especially if it is pushing a open rear end.
Mines with a 454 10.9:1 compression, .537/.557" int/exhaust w/ 292 advertised duration, 750cfm carb, weiand team g intake, 2 1/4" headers, 3.31 gears, th400 trans w/ 2000RPM stall.
No idea of HP figures or quarter times yet. Motor is newer than the upcoming racing season so I haven't had time to take it down to the track yet. I'm taking it in to do some dyno tuning next month (payday permitting). http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

THORSS70 Feb 7th, 00, 9:26 PM Ditto on the first gear burns. I have to put 4peoplein mine to get to hook in low gear, and even then have to feather the throttle to 30 or so. With me in it alone, I cannot punch the throttle in first gear at all, and if I shift into 2nd and at the same time floor it I can burn em' ( bragging rights!!) This is with a 2.73 rear and 295 50's. Cool.
70 SS 454 Feb 7th, 00, 9:43 PM thor what engine cam etc??
what im getting at with this link is an answer to the question about hp vs torque for a street car...
it seems most all engines will burn the tires from a rool and those that dont i suspect will from a stop...especially the sticks...
so why build an engine for low end torque if you cant use it???
do any of you burn out if you nail it at 40 - 60?? i doubt it ... so at those higher rpms it seems the power is more usable...
am i missing something here...or am i just justifying that 509???

RatPowr Feb 7th, 00, 9:49 PM Floor the pedal and nerves detach from retinas! Just kidding, but the car WILL hook up and leave hard (cheater slicks warmed up). The tire smoking thing is fun to do, and this car will do it on street tires, but there is nothing like the feeling of the blood leaving your face and your car leaving the competition. 415 BBC .530 lift 232 duration@50, dual plane intake, 800 cfm carb 11.5:1 comp, 4:11 posi LOTS OF suspension mods, 10-inch cheaters.

I could do conciderably better with 3.73 gears but I like the freeway cruise rpm with the 3.55's especially if I drive to Chevell-abration http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

Gene Chas Feb 10th, 00, 12:11 PM Hey Rich you;re gonna LOVE this. My friend 509Camaro. Manual T400. Any gear any reasonable speed, no downshift, throttle down
, break loose. I rode with him at 55, 3rd gear. WHOA NELLIE!
His stated goal was to be able to break them loose at 55. Heck man he don;t even have to downshift. Of course, the car's been lightened tremendously, but all the Konis are set for weight transfer, not handling right now.( Keep in mind his is bit beefier than the Merlin 509).
And a tripower to boot!!!
It is too frggin' cool Rich. NO BS. I was sitting my 245 lbs carcass in the pass seat.

THORSS70 Feb 10th, 00, 7:52 PM Well, It will do this under good running conditions and a little steering wheel persuation! But the first gear traction is bad under any condition. Hey Cardiac, what cruise rpm's are you running with those 3.55's? Am going to that gear and worried about to much revving. Anyway, back to the original question, all of these engines that we have in our cars are overkill for a daily driver for the average driver. You can "get by" with a stock ZZ crate engine or a stock big block in your Chevelle for most performance type driving. If you desire more, well the engines in our cars are what you eventually build for you own satisfaction. Just be smart and you will be happy with your car for a long time.
Gandalf80 Feb 10th, 00, 9:56 PM 454, 10.5:1 compression, 280H magnum cam, small valves in polished oval heads, forged crank, holley 700 dp, rpm intake. Right now i have a th-350 tranny and an open 12 bolt with 2.73 gears. No kickdown hooked up, in third gear going 40mph if i step on it i literally slow down, one tire lights up and thats all she wrote. From a stop or idle I can start roasting "a" http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif tire and keep it going through every gear without any hint of it hooking up. BTW stock converter too. I have a posi carrier in my closet but i'm in school and don't have a hundred bucks for parts to install it. Oh well, hopefully it'll get in before summer.
BTW, all this power is 10 times sweeter if you built the engine yerself http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
