If you have a decked block and cannot read the vin and ID # keep reading. I do Magnaflux at work on aircraft parts and came across a method for recovering these numbers. Since these #'s were stamped into the block, even if they are shaved they leave a "signature" in the block. The area beneath the letters is denser from the peening process, therefore will attract the flourescent metal particles as if it were a crack. I did this today on my block which had no visible markings what so ever except part of a "0" that looked like...( . Like magic I pulled "T0814CKO" up on the pad graemlins/hurray.gif . My vin is behind the oil filter. I will post some pics of the process either tonight or tomorrow AM. This has to be done with wet magnaflux for better particle flow and greater sensitivity! This could be a great engine shop service or favor when rebuilding.

The FBI does a similar method with acid to bring back the filed off serial numbers off guns.

Does anyone know if CKO denotes which four speed and would/could this be more than likely CKQ with heavy duty clutch? Pretty hard to tell between O and Q.

Took a couple pics this morning. Look in the second album on this link. Can't get a clear shot of the numbers/letters holding the black light and camera at the same time. I'll borrow another set of hands and try again tomorrow. The rest of the pics show the magnaflux gear and orientation of the probe.

Forgot....if you look to the bottom right of the pad you can see the fuzzy outline of the #'s. The camera isn't focusing good up close but it's clear visually. It's definitely worth a try if you're in the same situation. Good luck! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I tried to find lost numbers from decking with steel blueing. Steel blueing is used to find hair line cracks in steel, and your right 70cam, stamping a block goes below the imprint. Just brush steel blueing on your pad, and wipe it off. The old numbers will show up.

ny69ssdave,
Are you referring to the same as pistol/rifle blueing? Does it stay permanantly visible and at least good enough to get a picture of it?
