I have a 69 chevelle that was orginally a 4spd car but was converted over to a turbo 400. I'm puting the 4spd back in and I'm not sure if I have the right crossmember. I was told that the turbo 350 & 4spd crossmemebr was the same and the turbo 400 is kicked back some due to a longer tail. Can anyone tell me is any of this is true and how I can tell the difference if I go to look for the correct one? Thanks

I have a convertible and the cross member is shorter for a convertible that I know. What you described sounds about right.

The crossmembers for automatics and 4 speeds are physically the same. For the TH400,a ll you do is slide the crossemember back and line it up with the pre-drilled holes in the frame. Original 4 speed crossmembers have a bracket welded on the back side of them in the center for mounting the stock Muncie shifter.

For 68-72 Chevelles, there are 2, two, TWO cross members.
There's the regular cross member and the SHORTER version for convertibles and El Caminos.
That's it, that's all there was.
Now, if the car was a FACTORY 4sp car, the the cross member had a couple of additional brackets welded to it for attachment of the FACTORY shifter------------------WHICH YOU DO NOT WANT.
Do yourself a favor, buy a Hurst shifter and then get the REPLICA shifter handle with M U N C I E stamped in it. Then you get the best of both worlds------------good shifting with a factory look.
