I checked all the numbers on my 69 SS and found something strange. To me anyway. Here's the breakdown I came up with:

VIN 13637- Chevelle hard top
9- 1969
B- Baltimore
368142- sequence

Stamped on block:
T- Tonowanda plant
0227- Feb 27
JK- 325 HP/ TH 400
1 9 68142- last 5 of vin?

casting #- 3955272- 69 396 2 or 4 bolt
B 28 9- Feb 28, 1969?

My question. If my reading is correct, how could the engine be built before it was cast? Or does my head for nothing?? graemlins/clonk.gif

The tranny number matches the vin as well, so I guess I have that going for me.
Thanks for the help.

John,

Sometimes those casting numbers can play tricks on you. I'd guess your block casting is really B 20 9. The zeros and eights can look an awful lot alike.

The VIN on your block should read 19B368142, so there are probably a couple digits that either were originally stamped very lightly, or else they have just deteriorated over the years.

OK, thanks for the response. I got the numbers using a mirroe, as the motor is still in the car. The block stamping is super hard to see, even after cleaning/ sanding. Those are the best I'm gonna get. Thanks again, John
