: What Cam???

I'm rebuilding a stock 327 with camel hump heads, quadrajet, dual exhaust and Powerglide. I DO NOT want a rough idle but would like just a bit of extra power. What duration and lift should I be looking for? Anybody have any recommendations for a quality reliable brand?? Thanks!

GM 327/350 cam, slight lope. Gm actually sells this cam still.

For daily drivers in heavier cars I've had good luck with "RV" cams. All the major brands make one and they'll deliver more low end torque without loss of vacuum and give a pretty smooth idle.

What's your compression ratio? The 327/350HP cam needs lots of it in a small motor, I had one in a 10:1 SB 400 and first time the loud pedal went to the floor it broke both motor mounts, had to chain the thing to the frame.

What car, what weight, what gear, what is the goal or most common use?
'Just a bit more extra power' is a bit vague
The Powerglide makes things more of a challenge.

67 Chevelle convert (not sure of the weight....3100 I believe)....I'm not a heavy foot...normal street driving. Rear end gears are stock but again, not sure the ratio. Any help???

The old 204-214@.050 sold by Edlebrock, Speed Pro, Elgin, Erson, Summit and a lot of other companies is OK. There are more modern cams with shorter seat duration and faster ramps that may make a little more power but are more expensive and may wear out faster.

Isky has a 208-208@.050 that would work good but again more expensive. I would not go over 210@.050 on the intake with a glide. I have the 214-224 Summit cam in a 69 Chevelle with a stock converter and glide and I think it would idle and be more responsive with the smaller cam, especially from idle to 2500.

Summit has a good deal on the 204-214 cam and lifters at this time for 10%off their already low price. You can usually find the same cam on ebay at a good deal if the shipping cost is not too high.

Up around 9.5 to almost 10 to 1 CR here for a 327..

9.5, Isky's old 264 Mega, but being on 108/108 centers, it will cackle.

Almost 10, Personally, I would install a CC 268HE or a Crane 272/272 Energizer in her and roll!

I also agree GM's 151 cam may be bit much for his motor which he wants to idle good esp since he has no idea of gear he's running.

A 350 motor with a few more cubes would be a little better off but in a 327 that cam with 222 deg dur @.05 it will be a little lazy of idle & at lower rpms.

I have driven a few 350/350 vettes that use that same gm 151 cam with manual trans & they were a little lazy off idle & lower rpms before total timing was in and rpms got up a ways.

So in this slightly smaller 327 motor and maybe running 273 or 308 gear with auto trans and tight converter and worse yet maybe with a glide that 151 cam in a 327 would not be a good choice IMHO.

Since he want's a decent idle and doesnt know rear gear ratio etc i would stay farily conservative & would not go over approx 208-210/212-214 deg dur @.05 ,.420-.430"/.440-.450" gross lift ,on 114-115 LSA in his little 327. . His setup may have carppy 273-308 gear for all we know because he doesnt know either so better safe then sorry then somewhat over caming this small motor in this case.

"but in a 327 that cam with 222 deg dur @.05 it will be a little lazy of idle"

I totally agree. That much intake duration would really need a mild converter or gears.

The Edelbrock Performer cam would be the perfect choice in my opinion. As stated in a previous post, this profile is also available from various other sources including Summit.

If you don't mind running a solid cam, a Clevite 229-1998 would run pretty well in your 327. Its rated at 219/228 at .050" but being a solid will behave like a hyd cam 8 deg shorter. This cam is on a 114 LSA so it should run smooth and be plenty torquey. The wide lobe separation will give it a smooth idle and work well with the compression of flat top pistions and camel hump heads.
