I started working for a family owned lumber yard in 1985,in the late 90s a big corp bought them out,and thats when the downhill slide began.
customers lost, strange decitions, and a we dont care attitude wrecked the company.
so me knowing my job was not going to be round forever,I commenced to getting my so called ducks in a row.
knowing the end was near,I started taking action, refinanced my home in dec, which allowed me to pay off a credit card, pay off my bike, and get me to the point the my homeloan was the only payment I now have.
jan 5th I had a hernia operation that I needed, see Im a class A cdl holder, with experiance in the field, and other skills my 24 years at the yard has given me.
was let go feb 13,one day before my wedding day.
well we got married ,and I held my head up.
guess what Im trying to say is,if you see your employment growing close to a near end, think it out and get yourself to the best atvantage by thinking it out, dont have the it wont happen to me mindset-because it can and will.
Dont freak out and get all crazy,be smart and get it together,it can pay off.
Im getting job offers, and can be selective to a point, and so are employers.
my plan fell together in the knick of time to the date, some times it seems to well planned.
but keep your head up,dont give up,and have a positive attitude if you are in the same boat.
some times when things get bad,it can be a blessing in the long run, keep plugging away.

we will all pull through!!!!!

I hear you 67RAT, I lost my job of 29 years, 3 weeks ago. Luckily, I was hired by our competitor, but did take a cut in pay (10%). In these times, it is difficult to take, especially when my sign company was in business for 112 years. Trying to keep things in perspective, as things could be way worse.

Plus, we are in national news right now, with the flooding in Fargo ND, so things can always be worse!!

People from this area are true survivors, and hard working people that have done everything that we can, to keep the Red River at bay.

Hang in there TC members!!!!!

Agreed, my semiconductor fab is closing in a few months, but I have been preparing for a year by saving cash and paying down debt. Hopefully I can find a job in a reasonable time but if not I am not going to lose my house or my mind over it :)

I got laid off tho weeks ago on Friday the 13th and a week later my girlfriend got laid off. Unemployment is only about a 1/3 of what we make. By the end of May if we are not working maybe on the streets:confused: I may have to sell the camino. Monday I will have to hit all the job sites.

Uhhhhhh!!! read the next two lines very carefully!!!!!

LINE #1 Because with the amount of job offers I have ,I can be a bit selective !

LINE#2 Im not quick to panic and let being unemployed blurr my judgement!!

I've been off for 4 months now. I've been applying to several jobs a week, and only heard back from 3 of them so far. :( Spring is near, so there should be some laborer jobs opening up as the ground thaws and construction season can begin.

I got my permit for a Class A license, last week, and will be doing some practice-driving this week so I can schedule a road test... don't know if I'll find work in that either, but it will help diversify my skills.

4 years ago when I was looking for work, I was able to walk into a production welding shop, and start the next day at $12/hr, which paid the bills. Now those same jobs are $9/hr... can't put my son in daycare and drive to work for $9/hr :(

derik, you have your class A permit, are there any schools in your area to get training?,it can be usefull, they not only teach you the driving part, but also the things you need to know.
people put down the driving schools, but my training showed me alot, and I worked hard and got a 98 % over all score.
my schooling in 1985 was 18 weekends long,sat sun,and cost only $2600.00
Being your not working, you could go during the week and possibly get a displaced worker grant to do so.
most employers look at the schooling as a year experience, most employers.

5 weeks for me with no job prospect in sight. I know I am most likely goingn to have to forget the teaching profession. But at 53 and over qualified for almost everthing out there right now. I am having a rough time of it.
