OK, I BOUGHT A 1967 CHEVELLE SS 396 FROM MY A OLDER MAN THAT BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW AND IT SAT IN HIS GARAGE FOR OVER 10 YEARS. SO I WAS CHECKING THE ENIGNE BLOCK ID NUMBER AND IT READ " TO6 22 EM 7Z 159 6 773 AND THE ID OF THE CAR IS " 138177Z159773". WHY IS THERE A " 6 " IN THE BLOCK AND NOT THE CAR'S ID? IS THIS A MATCHING NUMBER SS 396? PLUS, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR'S COWL TAG, THERES A BUNCH OF NUMBER'S LIKE WHERE THE OPTIONS ARE, READING "30971 160134". WHAT ARE THOSE NUMBER'S FOR AND WHAT DO THEY MEAN? COULD ANYBODY HELP ME? THANK YOU graemlins/hurray.gif

I think Mike missed part of the original question...

It seems like his VIN stamp on the block has an extra character stamped into it...

TO6 22 EM 7Z 159 6 773 AND THE ID OF THE CAR IS " 138177Z159773". WHY IS THERE A " 6 " IN THE BLOCK AND NOT THE CAR'S ID?The block stamp has a ...150 6 773, yet the VIN is just ...159773...

Are there actual spaces betwee the "159" the "6" and the "773"?

The factory did make mistakes.

I thought the factory used a "gang" stamp to stamp all numbers at one time, or was that just on the date/suffix codes?
