i didn't really know where to put this, but my uncle has a boat with a 305 chevy engine in it and the short block is toast, water was in the cylinders and a ring land broke off when it was broke loose....

are the automotive 305's usable as a short block???

are automotive bearings, pistons, and piston rings usable instead???

after reasearching he's only found outrageous prices for reman/new short blocks... thanks for any help!

you can always use it as a anchor for the boat. that's about all 305 are good for. around here they are a dime a dozen

Except for a very few reverse-rotation engines, a boat long-block is just a car long-block with brass frost plugs and an extra thousandth of piston-to-wall clearance.

Boat engines do get the crap beaten out of them, though, so it's best to use premium internal parts.

Find a complete long block 305 (if that's what you really want) They can be bought for cheaper than rebuilding the one you have. In a day you could be out on the lake again.

Remember if you are going to use the engine from a car or truck you will need to use the camshaft from the marine application. If you don't, the engine will be a real slug in a boat.

There really is not much difference at all between the boat engines and truck engines. The camshaft is different but that is about it. I have an OMC 305 in the shop right now and it even had the normal GM head gaskets on it.

Are you sure that those are the correct casting numbers ?? I cant find them anywhere either and I have several sources.

How much does he want to spend anyway ?
