VIN: 136379G319877
Body tag: ST69 13637 FM 44923 BDY
TR 756 57 B PNT
12 B
12-bolt: 3959058 NF
K18 CF1111
It has a 5500 redline, and had a cluthpedal. There is no floorhump above the transmission.
It doesn´t have -69 bucketseats.
Do I have a SS396 or not ?
Could this have been a manual 3-speed benchseat car with the shifter on the column ?
Alan L. Colvin doesn´t list the rearend casting number 3959058 NF. Is it correct ?

Here's some of the information which you may already know.

ST69 13637 - Malibu 2 door hardtop V8.
G - Framingham, MA assembly plant.
TR 756 - Black buckets.
PNT 57B - Fathom Green, Black vinyl top.
12 B - Build date, December 1968, second week.

Sorry, can't help you with the rear end information.

The standard transmission on a 69SS was a HD three speed. With a bench seat car I just can't see it on the column with an SS. Can envision the standard 3 speed (Non SS HD) on the column. Just my opinions on this.

No way to confirm from the information provided if this car was an SS.

Hope this helps a bit.

Here is some of the rear info:

K18=casting date, Nov 1st 1968
CF1111:
CF= 3.31 posi 12 bolt
1111=Nov 11th rear assembly date

A mid Nov rear date with a mid Dec car assembly date looks right to be the original rear for the car.

I´ve been looking through the links and resource center you guys have provided. They were great !

:confused:
But I have some additional questions:
1. I also believe the rearend to be the original one. If an SS396 was ordered without specifying a gearratio, wouldn´t the posi 3.31-1 in this case indicate a certain 396, like the 325 hp ?

2. Didn´t the different 396 engines have different tach redlines ? Wouldn´t the 5500 redline in this case indicate a certain 396 ?
What tach redlines do you have in your 396 cars ?

3. I checked the floor in daylight, and it seems like the floorhump was removed when they put the automatic in it. Which transmissions required floorhumps ?

they put tachs in cars that had small blocks too
also the column shift was also seen in ss cars
all stanard floor shifts had a hump console or not (but they look different from each other)
if it was a bb then there should be two fuel lines to the pump (325 & 350 horse)

Anders, in regard to rear end ratios, here are a few of my opinions based on information from various printings.

396/325-350 HP - Standard ratio 3.07 with automatic.

396/325-350 HP - Standard ratio 3.31 with manual.

396/375 HP - Standard ratio 3.55 with any transmission.

All ratios up to 3.55 were available with optional positraction. For 3.73 and numerically higher gears positraction was mandatory.

Tach redline discussions have come up in here on a regular basis. I would say the 5500 would relate to the 325/350 HP cars. L78 cars got the higher redline, primarily 6000, with the odd reference to 6500 from some. Not sure what the redline was on the L48 350/300 HP small block.

Again, these are opinions. Hope this helps.

Thank you guys!

I consider this car to be a pretty basic SS396, with vinyl roof, PB, PS, positraction and little else.
In recent years it has been one of the fastest Chevelles in Sweden. The best E.T. the former owner Johan Gustavsson managed, with a normally aspirated 454, was 10.22, without nitrous. He raced it with a glasfiber hood, but I have put the SS-hood back on it.
The idea is to use it while working on my COPO, and when that is done, bring the SS396 back to original specs. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The 69 Chevelle with a 350/300 hp got a 5000 rpm red-line tach.
