I am helping a good friend who just bought a 66 chevelle SS, there is some doubt on the actual vin number of the vehicle and we were hoping to find it stamped somewhere on the main body to verify it. The door post tag is missing, and the cowl tag may not be the right one. I have heard of it being stamped on the main body somewhere but cannot find one. Does anyone have an idea where to find it?

if a 66 was done like 65 on top of the rear left frame rail by the gas tank the vin is stamped on the frame it is stamped on my car twice you can take a mirror and slide it between frame and body to locate it you will have to use another mirror to make the backwards view correct

Under the heater core box cover, engine side. Have to tear it all apart. Also under the cowl grill cover.

Pop open the trunk and look under deck lid in the top drivers side corner of rear qtr, just up from the trunk seal on the rear qtr. it should say 13817. They stamped them 13817 for supersport and 13617 for malibu. If its a 13617 U know something fishy is going on if cowl tag is a 13817. What is the prevoius owners explanation as to why the vin tag is gone????

Maybe also check with your local police/highway patrol...
I know here in California, my friend bought a similar car (1966 Chevelle with NO VIN tag in the door jamb)... We already knew it was a clone, but we didn't know if the car matched the title...
The Highway Patrol checked it out at no cost to him (he hadn't actually bought the car anyway), BUT they wouldn't let him watch them look. They pulled it in the shop and closed the door... Then opened it and rolled the car out a short while later...
Under the heater core box cover, engine side. Have to tear it all apart. Also under the cowl grill cover. Maybe, but I have had both these areas off of many 66 Chevelles, and I have Never seen the VIN in those locations... Model numbers (13817) yes, but VIN no...

Thanks for all the help! Last night we did find the vin # on top of the frame between the frame and the body on the drivers side rear qtr area near the fuel tank. And the number does match the title and the car, it is a true SS and it all matches much to the relief of my friend who bought the vehicle. Thanks again. Peter

Not easy to find, its supposed to be difficult. Looks at these images. They are not mine but were shared by others who found them after much work. These are 60's GM cars.
