Flat tappet cam? If so the current oil of choice is Chevron Delo 400 which has enough ZDDP to protect your motor. I switched about a year and a half ago (thanks to Scott!) and it's great stuff. As a bonus, it's very inexpensive at Walmart (just got some last week I think it's $10.99 a gallon)

Depends on the climate you live in.....Here are some choices:
1.you can choose by hear say :secret:
2.you can choose by science and test:bow:
3.you can also choose by your manual as well.
4.you can choose by what your builder suggest.:boxing:

I like 10w30 but some guys like the 10w,15w,20w-40
I have heard some using 50 weight oil(syrup)
A guy here in spring with a 57 chevy puts straight 50 in his 350.
Thicker is not always better. Most guys will say the thicker oil will provide better protection, but studys have shown the thinner oil is able to flow quicker and better. Thinner vs thicker( its personal choice),it is all about the film compostion and strength of the oil and thats where the ZDDP and other additives comes in. I tried the diesel oil 15w-40 Rotella, I took that crap out and went back 10w-30. My engine ran hotter, oil pressure was very high, and exp viscosity drag. I was not fond of the idea of diesel oil in my car.

But I have yet to see any data that says that a guy using 30, 40, or 50 weight has an advantage on the other for typical daily driving. I believe its all about the preference, maintence and driving conditions. If you keep your oil changed you should be fine.

There are hundreds of extra gizzmos, special oil's and oil preferences. I am just going old school and keep it simple.
I use 10w-30 conventional with a Lucas Zinc ZDDP additive

I think Scott Wheaton has a large selection of oils brands that produce a 10w30 and correct ZDDP levels.

I just bougt eight gallons of the Delo 15W40 at Wal Mart (nine quart oil pan is thirsty). I would prefer a 10W30 oil, but since my engine will only be operated in warm weather, the heavier oil will be okay. I like the idea of a faster flowing thinner oil such as a 10W30, but so far the Delo seems to one of the few oils available that still has "the good stuff" in it. Valvoline "off-road" 10W30 is $4.79 a quart, and so it's too expensive considering the Delo is less than $3 per quart.

I'm running a late model 350 in my 66 and I go by manufacturer's recommendation...5W30. Maybe someone here has some input for me.
