The casting # on the back drivers side of block just above trans should end in #289 if its a 72-75 454. Its a very good block to use, the only 454 block better is 69-71 #512 block that is extremly hard to find.

If the motor is original to a 74 truck it should be orange in color the 76 and up motors were painted blue. Any good running fully dressed (pulleys, brackets) 454 is going for about a $1000. The older 454's also had the good flowing open chamber oval port heads 73's had 049's and 74 and 75 had the 781's. If its a 73-76 truck it could also be a 4bolt steel crank motor. Alot of 1 tons, duallys or camper specials were 4bolts. Have seen alot of 73 motors that were 2bolts but steel cranks, and in 76 they threw anything in trucks. I think it was because 75 was the last year for car 454's so anything laying around got put in. A friends dad had a 76 suburban 1/2 ton no towing package he was original owner. When motor was pulled to rbuild it was a 4bolt steel crank. Are U looking to buy the motor or truck or have U already bought it????

Well, I'm out in Idaho... lots of farms and stuff around, there is a old beat up (badly) 2wd that has the big block in it. There is also an older 60-70s truck there with a bbc in it, might get both for $350 smile.gif both are complete, minus carbs.
