ok, this is where i find out my b.b. is really a 5 cyl. yugoslavian diesel. heres the only # i could find on the block 11c142206. any help? there is one more number, but it's kinda wierd, it starts on the block and finishes on the head and looks like 11527lbs. now this number is inaccurate, it was late and i'll get it right hopefully tonight, but the 11c142206 is accurate and i hope somebody can help. thanks again, you guys are always a wealth of information.

'49 Hudson Hornet (with air). Sure its not II instead of 11? II is a 427 Impala or '65 396 Impala. No casting # back on the bellhousing flange?

bell housing is new. the engine is supposed to be a 427, just trying to narrow it down. it didn't come in the elky, and i'm still trying to get back two or three owners to find out what it came out of.

1BH,

The numbers d1 were referring to are not actually on the bell housing, but on the block flange to which the bell housing bolts.

Standing in front of the engine, the casting numbers will be in the rear, on the right side, on the slanted section of the block right where the bell housing bolts to the block. Do you see a number string there? Does it end in 961 or 962?

Does it end in 961 or
962?What about 512, etc?

961 and 962 are 65/66 numbers only (396/427). 427s also came 67-69 with different casting numbers...

bell housing is newYes, but the numbers would be on the engine block, IMMEDIAYELY IN FRONT of the bellhousing (on the "flange" where the bellhousing bolts, not on the bellhousing itself). Look down the firewall, on the drivers side of the engine, between the cylinder head and the bellhousing, and right below the throttle linkage. There should be some cast (raised) numbers here, and these will help indentify the block. If the block is clean, these should be easy to read (might have to actually look from between the hood and cowl with the hood open). If its greasy/etc, then scratch off any crud with a screwdriver, etc...

Oh yeah... I actually was thinking the same thing with the "II" as being the engine suffix too...

11C142206 appears to be a VIN derivative

1 - Chevrolet Division
1 - model year is 1971
C - Assembly plant is Southgate CA (full size Chevy cars assembly)
142206 - Last 6 digits of the cars VIN

11527lbs does not make sense?? You have to get this figured out, its the engine code.

btw-No more 427 in cars after 1969 model year. They had them for trucks but VIN does not indicate a truck. A truck VIN derivative would start with a C for truck Division.

If it is a 427 motor odds are its actually a 454 block with a 396/427 3.76 stroke crank. Most 427's out there today are destroked 454's.........Keep your fingers crossed though........the price of original 427 blocks has gone thourgh the roof lately thanx to all them corvette guys.

well, we pretty much figured out, the only thing 427 on the engine is the valve covers. oh well, lesson learned. but i think i have enough to work with to make it a decent b.b. elky. we checked last night and it seems to have roller top end, so unless i have a spun bearing, it's hopefully going to be a stout engine.
