I am wanting to know about what the date range for an engine should be...for instance if I have a 1969 Chevelle SS 396 built in Feb. 69 what would the range of the engine be? Would a motor built in E 1 69 be correct?

Dave, I believe that motor would be too late, that's a May 1 69 motor built after your car. For a Feb. 69 car you should be looking for a J K or L of 68 or an A of 69 motor, possibly even a B of 69 depending on how late in the month your car was built.

Well I just figured out that the date on my trim tag is 10 B. Which I believe to code out to be Oct 2nd week of 1969? Is that correct?

Correct, 10 B, 2nd week of Oct .68. So you really need a very early Aug, Sept. or 1st week of Oct. 68 block to be period correct. Good luck with your search.

Sorry to sound a little dumb but did you mean 69 not instead of 68 block?

Anyone know how to code the date stamped on that pad on the front of the block?

Dave, the 69 cars started rolling off the assembly line in Sept of 1968. Hence the need for a 68 block to be period correct for a 2nd week of Oct. car. An Aug. or Sept of 69 block would be correct for the 70 model year. Same situation, 70 cars started rolling off the line in Sept of 1969.

10B on a 1969 Chevelle would be October second week of 1968. Production of 1969 year model cars began in September of 1968 to make the Fall showroom introduction of the new year model cars.
It was a big deal back in the day.
October of 1969 they would be making 1970 year model cars.

So a motor with build date E 1 69 would have been for a 1970 built car?

T1212JD - what does the T mean?

Sorry Dave, I hit the 9 instead of the 8 in the earlier post. A May 1 69 motor would be correct for an early May, June or even July of 69 car. The 70 year motors also had 3 letters to denote the engine code on the block, ex. TO127CTX as opposed to the 2 letter codes of previous years.

so a E 1 69 motor would not be correct for a 1969 Chevelle no matter what the build date of the car was?

T1212JD - what does the T mean?

T = Tonawanda aseembly plant
12 = Month of Dec.
12 = Dec. 12
JD = 396 375hp built for a 4 speed 69 Chevelle

JD is a very good motor, what is the casting date on the rear flange( pass. side )? There should also be a casting number opposite that on the drivers side rear flange.

Dave, where are you coming up with the E 1 69 number?

It is a 69 motor, just not period correct for a car built in Oct of 68.

I have a block and that is the date on the back in raised numbers and letters

I believe if it is an E, maybe it's 16 and there should be only a single 9 for the year. I would double check to see if it is an E. You have a Dec. of 68 code for an assembly date but a block casting date of 5 months later which can't happen. Something is not right. Is it possible the 9 is an 8, that would make more sense.

Then yes, a May of 69 block would have come in a 69 car. I didn't realize you were describing 2 different blocks.

block number 3955272 front pad reads T0522KD on the block I am thinking of building. Date on back is the E 1 69.

Most of my engine componets are dated for May 1969 with the completed engine being dated in June. The car was built the second week in July.

That means the block was cast on May 1, 1969, and the engine was assembled on May 22, 1969. Very logical and believable time sequence. That would undoubtedly have been installed in a car with a scheduled build date some time in June 1969.

I've got a third week of June '69 car (6C), that I am planning on installing a casting number D 29 9 (April 29, 1969), assembly stamping T0521JD (May 21) into.

I believe this would be a pretty good match. The VIN on the vehicle is about 1.5-2 weeks prior to mine built in the same assembly plant, Baltimore.

I WILL NOT be restamping it.

Looking for the rubber housing that a vent ball fits in on the driver side of a 69 Chevelle, any help greatly appreciated.
