Got two posts tonight! My axle code is CKD 08 6B. I figured the 2.73 out but not the rest. It's a Jun '69 dated 12 bolt under a Sep '69 built El Camino. My bigger question is could this be a correct rear end option for an L-78 SS? I also have what looks to be an original or early added tow hitch? I've seen a post where an SS was ordered with a tow package. Any facts or thoughts are more than welcome as always. graemlins/beers.gif

Looks like an August rear but one digit is missing
70 format is MMDD
08_6 B:
08=Month, Aug
_6=day of month 06 or 16
B=Buffalo axle plant

Can't help with the rest of your questions..sorry

I'd bet the 'standard' rear would have been a 3.31 since both the L34 and LS5 got those and the LS3 got 2.73s. However, any ratio could have been ordered. My guess would be any 'towing' package would have been an authorized dealer option and not factory installed.

The rear end has a F 16 9 build date. Is the Aug date on the axle tube the final assembly date? The axle date is the same as my motor build date and 30 days prior to the vehicle build date. It's not definite but pretty darn close to being the original rear I'm assuming. It's important because I'm still trying to confirm if it is a genuine SS. It's becoming apparent you could have it the way you wanted it (option wise) quite literally in '70. Thanks for all the input. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

F169 is the day the center section was cast. The date stamped into the tube is the date the axle was assembled.

Thanks everyone. How do we determine what was a posi now from those #'s? :confused:

CKD is not listed as a posi. Here is the 70 rear list

How do we match a rear end to the original car? Is it date only? The dates seem to match up perfect but not a likely rear end (open 2.73) on a 396/375hp car? Either the car is not an SS or the rear was replaced with one from the car in front of mine on the assembly line. :confused:
