Hi could someone please decode the vin and trim tag for my friends 67 Chevelle, he's going to be putting up for sale this week and would like to have it decoded in case anyone asks about it, it is an SS clone, thanks.

Here's what I show Brandon.

ST67 13617 - 67 Malibu 2 door hardtop V8.
ATL - Atlanta assembly plant.
TR761 - Black bench seat.
PNT Y Y - Butternut Yellow, no vinyl top.
07D - Build date, July 1967, fourth week.

Hope this helps.

Something is drastically wrong. The VIN shows a Baltimore car, 13111 is a Chevelle 300 2-dr sedan 6-cyl while the body plate shows an Atlanta-built V8 Malibu. I'd double-check the numbers and letters on the VIN. If the car isn't a 2-dr sedan, someone has swapped VINs and that's illegal.

However, on the body plate:
W is group 1 option for a tinted windshield (only)
2M is group 2 and the M is for Powerglide trans
-206364 are plant tracking numbers.

Good pickup Dale, I never even looked at the serial number.

Thanks for the decode guys, I double checked the numbers and they clearly show what I wrote in my first post. So does it look like the vin has been swaped? The 67 in question is a coupe, if I'm understanding Dale correctly the vin would indacte it to be a 2dr sedan which would be a post Chevelle (with the side post like Novas) right?

The Chevelle has had some parts swapped on it. It has been made to look like an SS clone, it has all the emblems and the hood. It was a four speed car that has been converted to an automatic with the correct auto floor shifter and console (in really good condition) and the bucket seats are out of a 68 Chevelle and it has a 383 stroker with power steering and brakes and correct ralley wheels. Thanks again for the replies.

Correct. Not only does the VIN show a Chevelle 300 2-dr sedan but it was built in Baltimore, MD. where the trim tag is for an Atlanta, GA built car. In most states, the car would be considered illegal right now with the wrong VIN tag and subject to serious investigation.

I am not clear from the reply, is it a hard top body that matches the body tag or is it a post car that match's the VIN. btw-The VIN shows it to be a original 6 cylinder car. If the body tag has been changed, no laws are broken but if the VIN has been changed, that could be a problem for the seller or the buyer (depending on if the buyer knows anything.

Another case of someone spending on lot of money building a car with questionable VIN and body tags, who is now going to sell it to someone else. Buyer beware.

I hope everything is legit about the car (the VIN is correct for the car) or the new owner may hit a road block if he ever has to register it in a state that requires inspections because there are hidden VIN's. The seller could be in legal jeopardy if he knowingly sells a car with an altered VIN.
