: L34 smog pump part numbers & date codes
ratbldr Apr 17th, 04, 11:44 PM Is there any reference for part numbers on an october 1969 L34 1970 SS with california emmissions?
Thanks for any info, I've got a part lined up, but can't verify that it is correct.

mr70 Apr 18th, 04, 10:17 AM Are you Confusing the Smog,A.I.R.-Air Injecton Reactor, with the California Emissions system?
Also known as RPO NA9 Charcoal Cannister.
For the 1970 Chevelle,Only Spcl.Hi-Perf Solid Lifter engines,recieved the Smog A.I.R.System.
The L34 is a Hyrdaulic lifter engine, and regardless of where built or Sold, did not recieve A.I.R. Smog.
NA9 would have been built on your Chevelle if it was sold new in the state of California,or Neveda.
NA9 was basically a Charcoal cannister mounted on the D/S behind the headlights, and captured any unburned Fuel vapors for the cleaner Air act.
Are you asking for the Part numbers for that system?
ratbldr Apr 18th, 04, 11:59 AM It is my understanding that ALL SS 396 and 454 1970 Chevelles had the A.I.R. pump and exhaust manifold injectors. This is the first I've ever heard that L34, California or not, was not fitted with A.I.R. I've seen L34 cars with A.I.R., and was pretty sure that the 350hp motor came stock with A.I.R.
I'd like this not to be the case, so someone correct me if I'm wrong!
mr70 Apr 19th, 04, 12:54 PM Before 1970,the L34 Engine,when mated to a Manual Trans. received the A.I.R. system.Auto Trans. still did not.

The a.i.r. pump was dropped from the L34 for '70 because the T.C.S. system took over. The T.C.S. locks out spark advance until you are in high gear and have stayed there for at least 30 seconds. The charcoal canister also appeared for '70 and became more widely used in '71. From what I understand, the smog pump was still used on the peaky solid lifter big blocks since they tend to run dirtier in certain phases of operation.
The smog pump was used in '68 & '69 on V8s with manual transmissions, or on any open-element air cleaner equipped V8s (L34s, Z28s etc). It would not be used on an L35 with an automatic, for instance.
ratbldr Apr 20th, 04, 1:26 AM T.C.S. is the charcoal canister? What locks out spark advance with this system? I have a 70 L34 with manual trans. My build sheet lists the evaporative control option, but says nothing about the pump. It was a California car. No A.I.R.pump?

What locks out spark advance with this system? No its' not the canister, it's a solenoid that closes the vacuum line to the distributor.

ratbldr Apr 21st, 04, 1:05 AM What an evil little thing that is. I have one laying around in a box, and always wondered what it was. If I put it on, it definately will be made not to work. Stops the curve advance? What a nasty little device.
Jeff74 Apr 22nd, 04, 6:49 AM Tcs sol. comes apart easy. I removed the spring and plunger and put a small ball in the vacume line to the back of carb
