: Follow-on BBC progress report
kettbo Mar 24th, 09, 12:47 PM With the season-opener not far away at all....I really should be installing parts, not shopping. But deals are hard to pass on when they do present themselves.
I scored me a crankshaft last evening.... Since Christmas, these are some of the goodies gathered for the follow-on BBC to replace the rather modest 454 unit I assembled last fall.

and in case you are wondering about the crank, a new/virgin 4340 forged non-twist internal balance crankshaft...maybe you can make out the details etched on the crank throw....

webfoot Mar 24th, 09, 1:04 PM Looks like a sweet unit there, is than a CL score?
cobaltchev67 Mar 24th, 09, 1:04 PM GEORGE!!!!! I thought you were going to keep this build 'somewhat' secret? Great looking parts:yes:
65lkey Mar 24th, 09, 1:05 PM I saw that crank on CL. did you pay for asking price... haha look who i'm asking
Brettd85 Mar 24th, 09, 1:12 PM George, Looks like some nice parts. I have to ask though, why didnt you just build it how you wanted the first time?
kettbo Mar 24th, 09, 1:20 PM George, Looks like some nice parts. I have to ask though, why didnt you just build it how you wanted the first time?
Last year's 454 was simply to get me outa last place. Cheapest way possible was a Welfare 454. With less remodel $$$ going out, less $$$ for #2 to go to school, and me working...there is some $$$ to use. Always looking for bargains.
The crank and a free set of 781 heads cost me $400
65lkey Mar 24th, 09, 1:31 PM George is starting to get serious now. you and I will have to line up together on the 10th. I want a piece of the 454
69-CHVL Mar 24th, 09, 1:48 PM What's the CCW stand for on the crank - counter clockwise?
cobaltchev67 Mar 24th, 09, 1:58 PM What's the CCW stand for on the crank - counter clockwise?
My guess is it has something to do with the internal balance....something like Centered Counter Weight?
kettbo Mar 24th, 09, 2:02 PM George is starting to get serious now. you and I will have to line up together on the 10th. I want a piece of the 454
Sure Paul! You may get to run me many times while I gather the rest of the parts for the follow-on BBC. Not likely to happen overnight unless I win the Lotto. I'm sure I'll learn/re-learn a lot with the Super Budget 454..... When the next engine is ready, I'll sell my existing engine right outa the Elky.
The guy i got the crank from DOUG was gonna call you re your project Elky for sale.

ok its still kinda for sale. The s-10 that I was looking at sold, but i'd still rather find something with a cage already in it.
FerrariTruck Mar 24th, 09, 3:21 PM nice score Kettbo:yes:
kettbo Mar 25th, 09, 8:01 PM And this just in on the meaning of CCW
Source is my ol Pal Tom Dufur, 2x Champion SoCal Super Eliminator, 7.90 dragsters
Holy Cow,
This crank DOES have center counterweights!
It's the same configuration as the Crower I run in my 555.
The extra counterweights in the middle (just look at a stock crank for comparison) improve balance and harmonics control, at the cost of some extra weight.
I was afraid that it wouldn't rpm as quickly, which turned out to be not an issue- (7.70s, 177 mph- faster than any other non-Big Chief headed car in my class).
George, this crank is way too nice for you.
Sell it to me.
Kevin R Mar 25th, 09, 8:42 PM Do people realize this is a 4.25 stroker crank? How big are you going George????
kettbo Mar 25th, 09, 11:56 PM Do people realize this is a 4.25 stroker crank? How big are you going George????
Kevin,
I was in the hunt for a forged 4" crank. Was looking to use a set of Doc's small dome piston/rods sets he had acquired....you know, typical "George low-buck stuff"....even considering a 30/30 unit.....
Sun nite, I spied a new listing at 10:30pm......posted bout 10pm. I sent emails and started calling in the AM. I was on this like WHITE ON RICE!
I do have that block in the pic, already 30-over. Looks ok to me so it may be a 489. If bores are not as perfect as I thought, could end up 496. But I have plans to try to get a good #289 block and fit 4-bolt main caps to it, and go .100 over for 505".
But the short peg in the tent here is always cash....so my build will follow the path of least cash flow consistant with a good build. The parts collection in the pic was gathered for a very modest amount.... It is quite possible sale of the Super Budget 454 at some time would cover most of the next build.
I spent my "Get the Elky to the track 10 APR" money on the crank...glad I have roughly two weeks to get my Ducks in a row, earn another check for helmet and probably the wheels for the slicks.....
Should be easy 11.50 and easy on parts....initially. Looking at 10.2:1 with the big valve 049s. Gotta up-size headers, 12-bolt would need upgrades, th350 uprobably have to go and the wussy 2500 converter....so all this will take time. Meanwhile, get the Elky sorted-out with the Super Budget 454, get my tuning and driving skills in some order....and gather parts.
Kevin R Mar 26th, 09, 12:26 AM Will be really easy 11.50 but Im sure it will be faster than that. Just look at Brian and his 10.3-2 with iron heads and a smallish solid roller. Your going to have to cage that sucker:yes: or just run street tires and do a killer smoke show all the way down to get your 11.5:D
kettbo Mar 26th, 09, 1:19 AM Kevin,
If I had BrIan's old pistons and the open chamber 049s, 118cc chamber 10.2:1
Those pistons and Doc-modified closed chamber heads, 94cc, like Brian had, I'd have 12.something:1 so I can go mild or wild.....
Mild being 11.5 runs without a lot of fancy parts and street trim.
Wild, well, we'll see. Maybe better in a different vehicle if 'wild'
re CCW cranks
I turned Dennis down the street onto that GEN VI 454 last week. It had two small center weights...interesting... Too bad the crank is toast...
OutCast Mar 26th, 09, 1:25 AM Soon you are definitely going to be George of the Jungle. ;)
aukai Mar 26th, 09, 1:27 AM Nice parts George. You will be looking for ways to slow it down. Maybe put the old 454 in the back and tie it downl:)
kettbo Mar 26th, 09, 1:31 AM Soon you are definitely going to be George of the Jungle. ;)
Let's not go there!!!!!
I did snag some 98cc closed chamber oval port heads this afternoon in case I end up going high compression/dedicated race. I've not seen many sets lately. Cannot remember what else the seller had for sale, he is sending a list.
Damn sinuses kicking my ass......

wher'd you get 10.2;1 with brians old pistons? he had 5cc domes. I've got a set of 702's that could be had for the right price
kettbo Mar 26th, 09, 2:36 AM If I have the right part number, small dome for Eddy 110cc chamber -18cc dome.
With 118cc head 10.2:1
A 5cc dome is not much more than a valve relief......
This info on the SRP web page
212156 489 4.280 4.250 6.385
1.270 pin ht
(112) 10.7
(118) 10.2
(124) 9.7
18cc dome
545 g wt
Now ya gonna try and sell me Brian's old 702s? Brian was running about 12:1 with those heads Paul..... I just ran the numbers, more like 12.5:1
FourEightyNine Mar 26th, 09, 3:06 AM Ur running the wrong numbers georgey boy
143593 489 4.280 4.250 6.385 1.270
10.4@101cc with a 40 quench.
The ones you ran in ur numbers had an 18cc dome. Not a 5cc

this one?
143593 489 4.280 4.250 6.385 1.270 10.4 9.9 9.8 5cc 534
So I'd have to run small cc heads or have weenie compression.....
I guess I got the combos screwed-up, apologies to MG.
So with 96cc you had 10.7:1?
May have to get 18cc domes.....
65lkey Mar 26th, 09, 11:41 AM No problems george. I think you got Brians pistons mixed up wIth Bretts, he runs an 18cc dome.
These are what yah need:D:yes:

Not.....13.09:1 CR with 118cc heads, SWEET!!!!!!
kettbo Mar 26th, 09, 2:12 PM KB789 does look interesting 20cc dome
