Hi,
These are the casting numbers and the pad/serial numbers from the engine we pulled from Jill's 69 SS. I know the casting number means 69 2-4 bolt but what does the serial number and the "other"number on the pad tell me? Can you tell what kind of car the block originally came from with these numbers?

Thanks, Lance

T1106JQ says Tonawanda, Nov 06. The JQ corresponds to a 1969 Chevrolet. According to my manual, it doesn't correspond specifically to a Camaro, Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Nova, or Corvette, just general Chevrolet. Maybe someone else can find something more specific.

So, it's a 1969 396 with 2 BC, T/H.

And the serial number is the VIN number of the car it came from, and that would match the tail end of the VIN number on the body and on the transmission.

FYI

When it says Chevrolet it often refers to full size cars, also the term passenger refers to full size cars.

JQ is a 1969 full size passenger car 396-265 hp 2-bbl carb and TH400 trans RPO L66.

I can't read the VIN derivative on the right of the pad. That should show the GM division, assembly plant, model year and plant sequence number for the car. This should match the VIN to be numbers matching and your original engine.

One source I have indicates JQ as 396 CI from a "full size" 1969 Chevrolet.

EDIT - there's Mike beating me to the keyboard again ;)

Thanks Everybody,

I can't read the "vin derivative" either. It's only partially stamped. I was really just curious as we knew that it wasn't the original motor for the Chevelle. Could full size mena truck also? It had truck heads on it.

Thanks again smile.gif
