What is it? On the "Body Number Plate", after ST 70 (Model yr. 70) there is 13637. This is supposed to mean (2 Door Coupe Malibu). Was there a differance by Chevrolet in this code for Malibu and Chevelle? The owners state registered "Title" reads "1970 Chevrolet Malibu Coupe". All parts are matching (car vin., engine vin., Trans, rear end, etc.)with the original build sheet showing that it is a Chevelle SS. Oringal build sheet matches vin numbers. What gives? Is this real or could this be a fake?
Malibu was just a trim option, couldn't be an SS without it. If all docs match & look original (no laser printers!) You're good to go. Can't verify an SS in 70 without docs.

The SS was not a separate series as it was prior to 1969 but rather an option and there would be no difference on the body plates between a Malibu and a Malibu with the SS option. The base Chevelle 2-dr coupe carries a VIN starting with 133xx (6-cyl) or 134xx (V8) whereas the Malibu is 135xx (6-cyl) and 136xx (V8).
All Malibus are Chevelles but not all Chevelles are Malibus. Think of it as a vanilla ice cream cone (base Chevelle), then add a chocolate dip (Malibu option), then add sprikles to it (the SS option on the Malibu). :D

Maybe this will help....
For 1970, the SS options, Z15 and Z25 were only available on the V8 model 2 dr Malbu and El Camino, 13637, 13667 or 13680 models.

Since the Chevelle/Malibu question was asked, didn't mention the 13680 El Camino but elcamino is right on. As stated before, the Malibu was a separate series than the base 'Chevelle Standard' in 1970 when Chevrolet 'renamed' the base Chevelle from 300 Deluxe to Standard.
