I have a 70 SS with a 396 in it. Engine number on front pad is CE953163. Am I correct in assuming this is a crate engine? Numbers on backside of block near bellhousing identify it as a 69 Hiperf Passenger. Any way of knowing anymore about this engine. Was it a GM replacement or aftermarket? It does have a edelbrock, Holley 3310, but I'm sure that it is an add-on.
Thanks

It is an "Exchange" engine as denoted by the CE prefix. The 9=1969 and 53163=3163 exchange engine build at the Tonawanda engine plant (numbering started at 50001).

CE stands for CHEVROLET ENGINE and will appear on all service engines (came thru the parts system for warranty or dealer service)
