Guys, I just changed my dist cap and thought I had all wires back in correct order. I dont have a assembly manuel with me as Im picking it up at storage. Can some one tell me the firing order on the dist cap from 5.00 o clock counter clockwise. Thanks Norman:(

I can tell you the firing order from 5:00 Clockwise. It's 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. I'm also guessing this is a chevy v-8.

All you did was change the cap? If it was running it should run again. Did you mark or note where the #1 plug wire was?

never took plugs wires off, I know they are in the right order. Ran perfect.

You say you never took the plug wires off...I assume you mean not all at one time but one at a time?? Anyway, any chance you have the rotor on backwards...they are keyed with a round and square hole but it could be forced. If that's not it, could it be you bent the rotor contact or the carbon rod is missing from the new cap??? Is the cap all the way down where it belongs into the guide pins on the distributor?? I'm going to assume you didn't screw up the timing order if you changed one wire at a time, so the problem must be somewhere else. If all else fails, bring the engine up to top dead center on #1 piston, pull off the cap and look to see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to the #1 plug wire (or very close anyway). Then re-check the firing order (as posted above) as you go around the distributor (clockwise) to varify that it is in fact correct. Given all the above checking out there is no reason it shouldn't run.

See fig2 at the bottom -SBC/BBC ,same firing order and rotation

If this is HEI ,did you install the center contact in the cap ?

You may think it's in the proper order but it's time to start over and verify it. The firing order is cast into the rear of the intake manifold. It is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. With the #1 piston at top dead center on the compression stroke, the rotor should be pointing to the #1 plug wire. Proceed from there in a clockwise direction to check the rest. It's pretty easy to screw up the order when changing caps.

Norman:

One more thought....did you check to see if you have spark at all?? If not it could be that you don't have a firing order problem but a coil or coil wire problem. Start with that. If you have spark then it's firing order. Sorry, should have thought of this earlier.
